Racism's Face is Everywhere. It's even on Wikinut

Racism is as pervasive in America as it ever was, and it continues to keep this nation from realizing its potential as envisioned by its Declaration of Independence and its Constitution.

What minorities have to contend with every day

Blacks and other minorities - in this country Native Americans, Muslims from the Middle East and Latinos as well - will tell you that scarcely a day goes by when they don't run up against racist treatment in one form or another.

I have even witnessed it on Wikinut.

Recently, one of our authors penned an article addressing the murder of two police officers in New York City by a crazed gunman who had earlier killed his ex-girlfriend. The author pointed out that several people were pointing fingers: at people protesting police violence, Al Sharpton, Barack Obama, Bill DeBlasio (the mayor of New York) and others.

In response, I commented to the author that none of those people were responsible for the murder of those officers, as people like the president of the police union and Rudi Guliani and all the pundits on Fox News were charging, that the person responsible was the murderer himself and no one else.

Subsequently, another of our Wikinut writers then commented on my comment, addressing me thus:

"What do yo have to say, Steve, on the egregious use of violence by people of color against people of color, against shop owners, businessmen, innocent bystanders, against women on their way home after work in the dark, in parking decks, perhaps carrying Christmas presents for the family, against innocent bank tellers (black people are the only people who rob banks?), the guy who puts his arm around your wife (????), the kid with the computer he wanted...

What say you about the violence that such thugs perpetuate in perpetuity against others for no reason? We should tolerate THEIR FREEDOM TO KILL US?"

The next time you hear some right-wing Tea Party type like the woman quoted above spout off about black entitlement and blacks being favored by affirmative action blah, blah blah, know that you are not only being confronted by rank racism, but by rank ignorance as well.

Straight to the point without wasting words.

I wish there was some way to "like" articles here. I'm not on any of the social sites, so can't like or share.

I think in some way some people like to perpetuate racism because it gives them power. Gays took away any power of hate by taking the word "gay" and claiming it so that it gave the haters no power

Hail to you Steve, well said and exposing this problem, regardless of the color, religion or tendencies who are to judge or point with the finger. Anyone can do a mistake an hopefully this situation can stop sooner than later. If our nation government wants to solve the worlds problems, why not solve ours!

Thanks for this post. I commend you for standing up, writing and voicing your opinion about that which you believe in. Many on this site read and comment on articles based solely upon a hardened personal belief systems which in turn will not allow one to really read an article. If you write about what they 'think or agree with' you are ok and you are 'followed '. Of course, we all have our 'favorite writers', so for 2015 I vowed to be more open to reading others writers and different genres so I can continue to grow. beyond my limited reality. Thanks for the articles you have written thus far, sometimes they rattle my leaves, but in truth, all breaths of fresh air do.

I am sure violence is a way of life for those who opt for it but is never the solution.
And I also like the idea of 'Like' and 'Share' as mentioned above.

Have a happy jolly New Year Mr Kinsman.

Great post Steve, but sometimes one is apt to ooverlook the bigger picture and dwell on micro matters. I remember reading a interview on Playboy by John Wayne. In sum he said tell me in which country the blacks are better off than in America. I agree the blacks are better off, but despite this it is also a fact that more blacks commit rape, murder etc as a percentage than any other race.

Jon Wayne's assessment is no longer true. Blacks are way better off in Canada and France, just to name two countries. The cops don't go around shooting blacks to death in those nations like they do on the average of once every 28 hours here.

White rape goes unreported much much more. The statistics are very, very questionable.

Well racism is everywhere and it is just the extent of it that varies. As for violent crimes, anyone and from any community can be doing such things and targeting any one community is bad and shows signs of ignorance. Yet I see very few people who can think like you and me, and far more people who start making judgements by just one incident. And that makes the situation not only in America, or India but everywhere very very bad.

Except perhaps Bhutan and Iceland and the two Poles?

Steve you are right to point this out - it is out of order to assume black people are the only ones committing murder or other crimes, I have seen two recent documentaries about US murders and on both these the perpetrator was white, and in one case was a rich white man.

In 19th century England there used to be a term "the criminal class" which indicated urban poor people as being the cause of crime, well poverty, sadly, breeds crime, but not every poor person is a criminal.

Unfortunately, there are those in America who believe blacks make up the "criminal class." It's really unconscionable.

Racism , Steve , in any form is like a cancer that, if not cut out just grows and spreads .
Sadly there are many forms of racism ..not just black versus white, but nations against nations ...culture , creed and a desire to dominate and divide , and ultimately destroy.
Everything stems from Pride, Hatred, Greed , ignorance and fear .
Eliminate these and the world would be a better place to live in .
God bless you with Peace and Happiness this Year of 2015

We have to grow out of racism but I do not know whether it should start with me! If a white person and another of color tells me the opposite, I have a tough choice starting with looking beyond physical appearances! It has become so ingrained in our psyche! If ever I visit America it may not be a cake walk at the immigration like for some! I feel it is the circumstance that molds us and our attitude.

I would be happy if the community involved takes the lead first to separate the wheat from the chaff and unites behind the majority good (I am thinking of ISIS). Then the all inclusive society should lend a hand to help blend all into a homogeneous whole without physical appearance taking precedence. That will be good karma too as once we leave this blessed place nationality, color, gender and everything that stands out here superficially will disappear. I try to look straight into the soul of not only human species and all are same!

Thanks Steve, you do shoot straight from your shoulders, one a of a kind. Prejudice should has no place when we opt for love as it will self-perpetuate - siva

It's nice to read your perspective Steve, but It really is pervasive across the world, in different form, continent or region..the prejudice to certain norm of superiority always prevails in the subconscious of ruling minority. A Chinese descent against Malay race. An urban professionals against his rural counterpart. with very striking denominator wealth against poverty or perceived affluence against less, much maligned in abstract form of power and powerless.
