Raindrops and Troubled Dreams

These are two recent poems, one of them about a date that never happened and the other about bad dreams and the comforting power of love.

Raindrops and Troubled Dreams

Raindrops are falling against my window
like little friends come over
to check how I’m doing.

Books and magazines lie scattered
on the floor, while some guitar
weeps gently on the radio.

The food got cold on the table,
and the bottle of red wine
is still waiting to be opened.

The candles are all burnt out,
and tears have ruined my make-up,
Coz’ you're not here.

Bits and pieces of dark thoughts,
Things or faces that cross my day,
And fears that somehow get worse
Gather together in a crazy way.

They merge, mingle and separate,
Get distorted, twisted and amplified,
I cringe in my dream, so desperate,
So powerless, that I can only cry.

I wake up with a startle, trembling,
Trying to get a grip in any way,
Down my cheeks, tears are running,
And I can’t scare the dream away.

And then I feel your protective hand,
Gently caressing my hair, like a child’s,
Like Moira and Peter in Never Land,
Like my mother’s hand, I feel safe and smile.
