Respect is Earned, not Demanded from Others.

This article talks about respect, and how respect should be earned, never demanded from others. Every one of us is capable of respect by respecting others as we respect ourselves.

Definition of Respect.

Respect, all of us are familiar with the concept and definition of respect. According to the Mariam Webster dictionary, the definition of respect is as follows: a feeling, or understanding that someone, or something is important, serious, ECT… and should be treated in an appropriate way. I am sure we can all agree with this. As such many and all of us wish to be seen and treated with respect as a respected person should, yet seldom do we get treated this way. AS a result we are left wondering, why did we not receive the respect we should have had gotten? This is because respect is earned, not demanded of others.

Self-respect.

In order for anyone to demand and expect respect from others, we should respect ourselves. This is known as self-respect. Without self-respect we can’t expect others to extend any form of respect to us if we ourselves do not carry ourselves in a respectful manner, or portray ourselves in such manner. If we go through life treating others like trash, but most importantly, treating ourselves like trash that is just what we will get in return. According to the Mariam Webster dictionary, the definition of self-respect is as follows: self-respect is proper respect for one’s self as a human being.

Taking this in to account, take a moment to think of all the times someone has been disrespectful towards us in life, or the times on which we inadvertently, or admittedly have been disrespectful to others. Also consider those times on which someone less than respectful has approached us demanding that we treat them with the same respect we wish to be treated. Now there is nothing wrong with that request, everyone should be treated fairly. But can you think of all the instances on which someone demands respect from others when they themselves are less than respectful and have little respect for their own image? Rich conceded and arrogant people come to mind, but folks from all walks of life are capable of this. The reason for it is because they don’t love themselves, they don’t see themselves as someone important worth anything to even spare a few seconds on their own self-improvement. If you recall, seeing someone as an important person, a serious person is what respect is all about.

Earn and give respect.

Therefore, respect is earned, not demanded. We earn respect through actions, by being a respectful person, by carrying ourselves through life as a respectful person worth respecting. If and only when we respect ourselves and see ourselves as respect worthy important individuals, can we expect others to treat us with respect and give us the respect we have earned. People go through life doing their best, going out of their way, accomplishing the impossible in order to earn respect from their families, their children and their mentors. Even prisoners who wish to fix their wrong doings and get a better life are capable of earning respect and getting respected in return, the rest of the world can very well do the same thing and stop acting like self-serving individuals who think they can get anything with a loud voice, being rude and snapping their fingers. Let’s make the world a better place by being respectful people who earn respect, not by demanding respect that we have not earned.

Some people think respect is owed. Perhaps in some instances it is but mostly I agree that it needs to be earned.
