Retirement Letter

I sent this letter out to my coworkers on my final day of employment. Some things may be relevant to your work, also.

Retirement Letter

All,

Today (2/25/11) is my last day with the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. For my own reasons, it’s time to move on and change my pace of life. After 21 years, I have (as many of you have or will) seen and done more than the average person could conceive or understand. I have made many great friends along the way and, I’m sure, an enemy or two. Before I go, here are some parting words of wisdom/advice on a few subjects that are near and dear to me.

Go home: Make sure that you do!

Health: Do not let the job consume your health. Know your limits and if your health is failing you, do what you must to improve it, up to and including finding a new line of work. Don’t let your last breath be caused by stubbornness.

Family: Let the people in your life know frequently that you love them. Hug them, kiss them, tell them - whatever it takes to get the message through. Never miss an opportunity to let them know, because you just don’t know if you’ll ever get another chance to.

Pride vs. Integrity: Defend your pride when you must, but understand that it is going to suffer some dents and scratches along the way. Crow isn’t tasty, but you can stomach it for a time. ALWAYS defend your integrity! When all is said and done, it’s truly the only thing that you have control over. The test is whether or not you can look yourself in the eye. Only your reflection knows the true you and your reflection will never lie to you. Never try to lie to your reflection, because you will always lose that particular staring contest.

I’ve heard this phrase more than once from departing retirees: “I’ll miss the circus, but I won’t miss the clowns.”

While this job truly is a circus, it is a circus of lions - heraldic lions. Those lions are the fierce, courageous protectors of the realm. The lions work together to confront and bring down the problems that face their family. To my fellow lions I say, “Keep working together. Keep your family safe from harm. I will miss you.”

To the clowns I say, “Knock it off. You’re creeping people out.”

Lastly, I don’t want to use “goodbye”. The word is too final. Instead, I’ll use the word “aufwiedersehen”, which roughly translated, is German for “until we see each other again”.

Respectfully and with love,

Lloyd Waters

Y'all are too kind. It was a bittersweet parting. I was glad to go, but I felt like there was more to do. It came down to living, instead of dying slowly.

One man can never make all the difference, Lloyd, but he can the link in the chain that does..I am glad that you chose to live than to lose yourself slowly bit by bit.Wisdom is sometimes knowing when to walk away...

Lloyd, you are so right. At times you must just let it go. I also love that you pointed out that at times, you just need to eat crow. Also though, those that others are placing the plate of crow in front of them, should take it in the way, it has been given to them. Nice read. Thank you for sharing.:)
