Rhode Island Red

A poem about the fine hen 'the Rhode Island Red' . A workhorse of a hen that is kept for its flavoursome meat as well as its egg laying capabilities. If anyone has kept hens you will know that they can all have their own special characters....this poem is about one such character...

Rhode Island Red

My Rhode Island Red,
With a cluck and a clack,
Preens her fine feathers,
Upon her fine back.

My Rhode Island Red,
With a clack and a cleck,
Wears her new pendant,
Upon her fine neck.

My Rhode Island Red,
With a click and a cleek,
Looks for a stone,
To sharpen her beak.

My Rhode Island Red,
With a clack and a click,
Sees her fine comb,
And thinks she looks slick.

My Rhode Island Red,
Now looking quite fine,
Goes to the shops,
To buy some mulled wine.

My Rhode Island Red,
With a clank and a clunk
Staggers around,
Now feeling quite drunk.

My Rhode Island Red
With a clack and a clock,
Retires to bed,
And sleeps like a rock!

Fantastic poem to honor a terrific hen. I have never kept Rhode Island Reds, but heard they are great birds.

Great one Richard, I like all chickens but my wife L O V E S them. She has collected everything chicken for most of her life. She even had a favorite rare "Tetley's" teacup featuring a brightly painted hen on a rocking chair, enjoying a cuppa, sent to her from my daughter in Dublin four years ago. Just two weeks ago, the new "baby" Labrador pulled on the table cloth and down came tumbling tea cup, scones and all. It was as though there was a funeral in the house that day. I hunted high and low to find a teacup with a chicken on it, for Christmas, but no chance of that here in South Africa.

Well what a story that is Tranquilpen. I really enjoyed reading that one, though I am sorry about your wife's broken Tetleys tea cup.
What about this one I found for you... http://www.katesemporium.co.uk/candles-cake-stands-tea-cup-candles/handpainted-chicken-hen-stoneware-tea-cup-candles
