SEO, Crap, and Making money

Why poor writing seems to make the most money online.

Not To Embarrass

Below is a paragraph from one of the highest earning 'writers' on another site. The person who wrote this makes over 1k a month from their 'online writing'.

"With all the hurry to get to good times in (Omited), why is it not on the Top 10 Best Places to Live list produced by MoneySense each year? It seems that "Everyone" wants to go have fun in (Omited), but the city usualy does not make the Top 10 Best Places to Work, Live, or Retire.

You Noticed, Right?

You noticed the repetition of "Top 10" right?
You notice it is in bold.
This means every search for "Top 10" will wind up on this page.

You notice the words 'good times' and 'fun'?
People may enter the name of a city and + with "good times" and "fun" in a search.

Only two sentences, but designed to catch the Search Engines.

Take Another Bite

Choke down this bit;

"The bulk of the jobs available in (omited) are within careers of Business, Finance, and Sales. Companies posting the largest numbers of jobs include banks, other financial institutions, and IT related businesses. "

Keywords are Business, Finance, and Sales. For some reason Insurance was omited. These words are often part of a search.

From a different Keyboard

Read this paragraph;

".... Roman Empire and point to parallels. The parallels between the US and the Roman Empire... than it was in the days of the Roman Empire. Mankind's ingenuity was... on display in the days of the Roman Empire; but so was the ignorance and brutality for which that era is so well known. For all the ingenuity on display... brilliance and philosophical thinking on display long before the days of the Roman Empire."

For ten Golden Points; what's the 'Keyword' here?

Further, notice the repetition, not just of Roman Empire, but every sentence repeats a term used in the sentence before.

Here's another example;

"Money may not really be the root of all evil... because people can have such different thinking about money.... the less money a couple has, the more disagreements there are likely to be; but even people with a comfortable financial situation fight about money."

There will not be a sentence in which the word 'money' is not used. No euphenism, no synonym, but Money.

The same word, over and over and over again.

But I was taught---

Forget everything you ever learned about writing.

Go for redundancy in both words and concepts.

Do not be original.

Compile a list of keywords and keyphrases.

Use keywords and phrases in subsequent sentences in the pattern; 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, ad infinitum.

Add totally irrelevant paragraphs which contain references to Lists in Boldface.

Create a Template where every key word, search term, trite phrase is used and each subsequent article becomes a 'Find & Replace'

Example

"Money may not really be the root of all evil... because people can have such different thinking about money.... the less money a couple has, the more disagreements there are likely to be; but even people with a comfortable financial situation fight about money."

Change Money to ChickenLips.

"Chickenlips may not really be the root of all evil... because people can have such different thinking about Chickenlips.... the less Chickenlips a couple has, the more disagreements there are likely to be; but even people with a comfortable financial situation fight about Chickenlips."

You Get It Now?

The boring saying; "Never Interfere with a System that Works" is never more apt than when writing online. Article after dead boring article yet those 'writers' make more money than you'll ever see.

They may have started bursting with promise and wrote lovely original pieces. But how many months did it take, when they were netting 83c to realise;

"Sure I don't like to clean the bathroom either, but it has to be done."

And set about going after the coin.

Because Wikinut has human moderators the crap will never get a star, and maybe won't even be published, but Content Farms love dreck. They exist for dreck.

People who write crap are on the Front Page, are the Highest Rated Members. These people are responsible for the high traffic to the Content Farm.

It has happened to you. You've been searching. There's a page of items, you click on the first, it's a boring meaningless blob of crap, and you keep moving down the list, by the time you are on page three you decide to alter your search terms, because somehow Google is not finding the 'real' information.

Meanwhile, you've helped crap writers gain another hit, you and the xyz thousand of people who are also searching. You've come to find Wikipedia the safe haven. At least it is really about what you're looking for even though the information might be suspect.

To make money online is not difficult once one stops writing for people and begins writing for Search Engines. Take a look at; http://www.google.com/trends/hottrends or http://soovle.com/top

But what about Quality?

Quality is not a priority when it comes to making money.
Look at McDonalds.
They sell millions of semi-toxic 'burgers' every single day.

You want to make money you write a McArticle using all the keywords and popular terms.

If you can't bring yourself to denigrate your keyboard, satisfy with 83c.

Once I tried to make a sensible SEO piece. It was hard but I made it. But, only then to realize, it didn't earn more than $0.001!

Sickening, isn't it? 0_o I write for another article site under a different name, one which pays a price you set per article (i.e. a higher paying site than Wikinut). I was dismayed after I wrote a few high quality individual articles only to have them languish in favour of articles about SEO, business and fitness - the entire site is geared towards SEO optimisation. At the bottom of your article's preview page they even have a keyword analysis for customers to see if the right keywords occur enough times! I wrote about archaeology, the paranormal, informative stuff about topics I love. The ONE article I have sold is a little piece about SEO for beginners I cobbled together when I gave up.

I use Wikinut for true quality. I write just as well on the other site, but try to gear it towards topics that get more attention. Still, I make sure they're quality articles. I'm still waiting for my second sale. Meanwhile on Wikinut, I'm close to earning £7 for my efforts! I know which I'd rather have ;)

It's a really sad reality that people are after rubbish. It's true we have bills to pay but I don't want to write a McArticle.

It is painful as a writer to go for trite; "Everyone is interested in health. More people today are concerned about health....."
on and on and ....

Thanks Buzz...yes it is senseless to join a site, publish and realise either you don't make enough to buy a pack of gum because it is on Clicks...(sniplsy is the king)
or that they want crap

I know when I started to write I had no idea how hard it was or that there would be so many things to keep in mind. Sometimes I throw the rules out the window, and just write what I want, and ignore SEO and the rules.

I don't pay attention to SEO. I know I'm doomed to poverty, but if I start and it becomes a habit, will I be able to break it?

Computer searches look for particular words...health, fat, lose weight, and so people write nothing using those words and get hits
