Self-Serving Sermons

While this might be a fictional story, it has elements of truth about how manipulative people can be by using the Word of God to their own benefit.

As Acts 20:28-30 reads:

Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers... savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.

A fictional sermon where a "preacher" tries to convince his congregation to tithe towards a worthy cause.

In today’s sermon, we are going to discuss the matter of tithing. Now as you all know, tithing is an obligatory offering which required the children of God to give ten percent of their earning but what most people don't know is why it came to be an obligation.

In the time that the Israelites left Egypt and became a nation unto their own, they suffered long and hard but God always provided for them. Because God provided the harvest, what he gave must be returned to him but it is not because he demands it but rather that it is our reminder that all we that we are and have is only through His Grace and Mercy. As it was said in His Word Leviticus 27:30-34:

And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree is the Lords; it is holy unto the Lord. These are the commandments which the Lord commanded Moses for the children of Israel.

During one of our weekly prayer meetings, the Lord came to us (the leadership structure of this ministry) and told us that he wanted us to spread His glorious message to as many people as possible. We were all excited and elated to follow Gods plan but we were stumped as we didn’t have the means to do so. We kept thinking of ways to make it happen and when we took action to try making it happen, something prevented it from happening until we got to a point where we exhausted all options.

Needless to say, we were stumped and what do you do when you are stumped?

That's right, you pray.

So we turned to prayer and believed that God would guide us to a solution and I don't know how many weeks we prayed and fasted and argued with one another but as we were just about at the end of our tether, the Holy Spirit came over us and revealed the solution that we were looking for.

You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name, He may give it to you.

We as the church leadership turn to you good people and ask that you all participate in the tithing so that we can go on a crui- I mean a missionary program to the Caribbean.

Malachi 3:10 says that:

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, said the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

Return unto me and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts.

You pay your taxes, right? You pay your debts, right? Then why can't you pay what is arguably the most important one of all? Some of you are law abiding citizens, have never received a ticket for a traffic violation yet you come to church to praise our Lord but at the same time, refuse to follow his word. How can you say that you serve the Lord but at the same time, willingly disobey His Word?

Tithing isn’t about us or what we want. It’s about giving thanks to the Lord for allowing us to behold his glory! You might think you are being clever by robbing God but the truth is you are only robbing yourself of Our Gods salvation.

There may be some of you who find yourselves conflicted. You hear all these stories about people who give their tithing to the people in charge of the Lords temples and find out that these people put the own needs above the Lord and thus painting most of Gods servants with the same color coat as theirs.

I can categorically state that these people are NOT servants of the Lord HOWEVER when their time comes (like all of us) they will face the Lord but while we will stand proud before Our Father with indescribable joy, they will cower in the Lords presence because they will come to find out what we already know:

That Our God is an Awesome God.

It’s as He said in Malachi 3:8:
Return unto me and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts.

Let us not worry about ourselves but rather give to God with a joyous heart, for he promised us and what God gives as a promise, always comes to fruition.

Can I get an Amen?
Amen.
