Selfishness to Altruism: Time for Truth to Prevail

It is time for an altruistic majority to set our agenda than allow a minority with selfish interests to ride roughshod over us. This will make our society not only truly democratic but also get our priorities right.

Endless Variety

Our world has such variety not only in terms of nature. We have hardly scratched the surface of what the whole creative process is about. We hardly notice much as we are hurrying helter-skelter most of the time. When our minds are preoccupied we lose sense of our wonderful senses! We just survive without living the moments. Then we have individual characteristics to keep us on our toes. Few leave their mark by their behavior to make us appreciate that goodness always prevails. Then, of course, the opposites who will never waste a chance to short-change others – their greed and selfishness know no bounds. So the pendulum of our daily lives and state of mind never rests in equilibrium. Only those who can accept the vicissitudes of life can find peace of mind.

Vested Interests

When we hear the news, simple acts of kindness touch our hearts. The young children are in the forefront helping others without expecting rewards but slowly they learn the ways of a rather cruel world – the short-cuts that lead to instant success. When the initial shock is over they swim with others to survive and the cycle is repeated. The adults are tainted; at least those that matter, our leaders. The media also manipulates our thoughts and actions to suit their business models! Certain human weaknesses are exploited as if they are the norm and nothing is wrong in pursuing such a lifestyle. Our society gets corrupted and stays so. We are in a vicious cycle, unable to break out of it.

Altruism – Such behavior is generally ingrained in our psyche. Live and let live is what most will adopt as a way to coexistence and peace of mind. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you is a good platform to base our thinking and actions. Then try to give more than take. Never even think of harming others let alone perpetrate heinous acts. In history we had times when benign kings ruled with lofty ideals – but in fact, are they not what we should aspire for? During times of peace, world renowned artists thrived to leave their mark across borders. In fact, they carried the message of peace to other countries and were welcomed with open arms.

Selfishness – When selfish acts are perpetrated, they leave a bad taste in the mouth, sour relations and leads to cynicism. Such short-cuts should be abhorred and those who indulge in them should be put in their place. But, sadly, they are allowed to have a free rein to make others who play by the rules getting labelled a failure, idealist, and ending up as losers. When we all know such traits ruin our peace of mind, why stand by the side giving them free rein, taking them as the norm?

Break the Impasse

Society is hitting a brick wall despite our progress in science and technology. We are trapped in a negative mind-set that trumps the goodness within the silent majority. Isolated acts of kindness get highlighted but the glamour of glitter, wealth and their accouterments carry the day! It leads to wrong priorities and lifestyles that bring all round ruin and debasement. Can we break the impasse and take the right turn?

Technology – Though the media highlights news that profit them and those that only cloud our thinking we have now social media to counter them. There are many sites that highlight the real issues and Wikinut is one of them. Many here portray real issues that concern the common citizens across the world. They touch the right cord and the issues raised resonate within us.

Problems are solvable - Some of the issues seem to go on forever like Arab-Israeli conflict and we are adding to them and even making some worse like in Iraq, Egypt and Libya. The old ones still fester but new ones are added! The ordinary citizens will only suffer in the end. Some of them are born with problems, spent all their lives lost in them and suffer for no fault of theirs. Technology can come to the rescue to highlight that these issues do not really matter to most and definitely not worth dying for!

Knowledge and Wisdom – We have now means to get news as it happens but what use when they go through one ear and out the other? We become impervious to human suffering as if they are the norm. Knowledge at fingertips but no reacting on them on time – but only adding fuel to the fire! The sum and substance of the whole present scenario; no wisdom from any quarters but one leader passing on the problems to another and both ending up blaming each other – sad lot of silent citizens hoping against hope for a better world!

Time to let go

I feel the majority will rather let the sleeping dogs lie – there is no use in stoking the fire of hatred and enmity. Past is truly past and we should just carry on. We don’t punish children for crimes of their parents. Let us try to move on with positive steps towards an altruistic world – no shame in that; selfishness should be forced into the backstage and it is no virtue to steal a march through unfair means. Let us hope we have learned from past mistakes – keep the knives out of the picture to solve our issues across tables. This approach will turn a new leaf in our lives to make them less stressful. We all know what needs to be done but we let few to dictate terms due to their selfish nature; and they trump and set the agenda for the altruistic majority. It is time indeed to set things right!

Thank you Randhir. We all know what to do but feel helpless. Let us embrace and encourage selfless people who are subjugated by a minority emboldened by getting away scot-free. But the latter will be held accountable eventually - siva

Thank you Stella, appreciate your comments. Whether we live to see such a world does not matter as long as we try our best to change course. It is an uphill task but we know what needs to be done. It is a tug of war but we know who has more strength though it lies dormant now. Let us be ever aware of the task in our every action - siva

There needs to be a catalyst, something that comes in a large way to change things. This is a wonderful post, thank you for trying to spread light and awareness over greed and corruption.

Thanks Kaianni for your input. The reality is we have no real leaders who can take us out of the vicious cycle of cynicism. Those we elect are equally bad or worse than the earlier! We need to get out of it ourselves through embracing creation in all its variety - not getting lost in making weapons of mass destruction and trumpeting - I can have them, but you cannot. And then killing others to prove our God is greater than yours! siva

I agree completely. I would love to see this happen. It is true we need leaders who feel the same who could honestly enact a cease fire on a global and complete scale.

Disarmament is not an Utopian idea but eminently possible but our leaders are held hostage by arms merchants who have no conscience. They sell to all and sundry for profit. Time the majority rose as one to say enough is enough - the real enemy of the poor everywhere is hunger. It is time indeed Kaianni - siva

Well said, dear Siva.

As Guru Padmasambhava says, “The exceptional quality of enlightenment lies in altruism; whoever slackens in the practice of altruism will forever miss the path to enlightenment.” The whole spirit of the teaching lies in “altruism”. The most essential point of cultivation lies in benefitting others but not oneself. One who works for his own benefit is far from enlightenment. Hence altruism is not just about action, but motive. Is our motive pure for our good deed? If not, it’s not truly altruism.

Those who imbibe a spirit of altruism in their everyday actions draw close to understanding the universal spiritual truth that all is one. Every unselfish act is a high form of prayer.

When we use our talents and gifts to serve others, our health is also affected in a positive way. By letting go of past hurts and forgiving others, we ultimately lead healthier and more productive lives.

Great Siva in adding another star to your impressive profile.

Very insightful and erudite input, dear Subra. When our thoughts and actions are altruistic we get a spring in our walk and look at all as part of creation, just an extension of us. Then pride, jealousy and selfishness just dissipate in thin air! Let us cast away artificial boundaries including religion, color and nationality. Let us embrace humanity - why, even fellow travelers who share space with us and breathe the same air! We are just part of the whole creative process and come with a return ticket. Our job is to lend our shoulders to the wheel of creation guided by an unseen force. The tipping point is nigh for taking the next leap of faith sans the mistakes of the past that make us go around in endless circles. The shift in consciousness is in the air - I can increasingly smell its fragrance! siva

Thanks for your insightful post. This is the season for a cosmic shift in how we share this planet. The 1% of every society are being shown for who they are and their corporate greed.

Thanks Ritzwitz. We should stand by truth. The main issue is ego from individual to countries. America has acted unilaterally and now it is the turn of Russia and China. Among the big powers it is like - He who has never sinned cast the first stone. We reap what we sow and that should be an integral part of a shift in consciousness - siva
