She is now a mirage

It's a poem on the heart’s longing for a lost beloved.

She is now a mirage

There was a time when along the bumpy
road of life hardly a moment elapsed
without she in my mind. She was always
somewhere around me, keeping my heart
illuminated with soft downy lights.
The naughty air around me teasingly
played with my hair and dress. It reflected
her agility and smiles, her suppressed
giggles and glee. The world around
was sunny with light smiling everywhere.
Happiness overflew its receptacles.

Then one day, she was gone all of a sudden;
as if she dissolved in the thin air;
leaving a load of pain for me to bear.
I have been bearing that burden, it seems
for ages now. The world has since lost all
its colours, all its mirth for me.

The sky today is overcast; and I
am travelling in a bus. It’s crossing
a vast expanse of open field extending
to a dreary horizon. My eyes scan
the vast gloomy space up to the hazy
meeting line of the sky and the earth.
The sky showers a rain of mist
upon my heart and something like a lump
rises from my stomach and chokes the throat.
Through the mist I look in pain in search of her.
Perhaps, in the distant hazy gloom,
the air will suddenly shape her
from nothingness, and perhaps my thirsty
eyes will catch a glimpse of her; then my heart
would rush to her to beseech her
not to vanish again.

That, however, was an absurd prospect
I knew; but when was the heart so fully
dominated by the head? So, my eyes
will never cease their search for her
until the time they have got to go
for the long sleep.
