Shocking Views on the Issue

Last day I had an interesting conversation with this girl. She was from a fairly rich background I believe and I am not sure how the topic of poverty came up, but I was shocked to hear her views on it. This is basically what she said.

"I believe poverty is a mind set of a person. People who live in poverty or on government assistance is usually not wanting to become better in their situation. This system is to be set up for temporary use. However, people have taken this as a lifestyle. Which is quite sad. I realize times are tough and people are currently seeking options. But living off the government should never be one of them. In order for our system to get better, we must do better."

My Take

I hate to disagree to this generalist approach towards poverty many of us have. Poverty is an exceptionally complicated social phenomenon, and trying to discover its causes is equally complicated. The stereotypical explanation persists that the poor cause their own poverty. Some people characterize the poor as fatalists, resigning themselves to a culture of poverty in which nothing can be done to change their economic outcomes. The “blame the poor” perspective is stereotypical and not applicable to all of the underclass. Not only are most poor people able and willing to work hard, they do so when given the chance.

Also, extreme poverty, carries with it a particularly strong set of risks for families, especially children. Compared to children living in poverty but having homes, homeless children are less likely to receive proper nutrition and immunization. Hence, they experience more health problems.

Agreed there are few who get used to government handouts but most will like to earn a living. There should always be a safety net for those who fall through the system - siva

I totally agree with what you write here and many rich kids are programmed into beliefs such as you have written unfortunately for them and for the world..
