This short story is about a man who recently has been having difficulty getting to sleep at night. He tried visualising instead, and he received what is referred to as a waking dream.

Funny enough, the very next day, his waking dream was confirmed for him in a real dream, which was more a vision I suspect, as it happened for him during the day.

John's alternative to sleeping

John had been having trouble sleeping, and getting himself to sleep, for a few months now.

He thought that it was due to the medication that he was taking. Normally, John was a prolific dreamer. He would dream and remember several dreams each and every night.

Now, that he was not going to sleep, or getting as much sleep, as he usually did, he was missing this extracurricular dream activity, very much indeed.

These last few weeks, and when he couldn't sleep then, he was now reverting to trying a visualisation technique that would give him a waking dream experience then instead.

John had heard that we all have a cord that attaches us to our soul.

The bible refers to this as a silver cord.

"Remember him (God)--before the silver cord is severed, and the golden bowl is broken; before the pitcher is shattered at the spring, and the wheel broken at the well."

This reference comes from the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes, chapter, 12, verse 6.

Tonight, and which was a Saturday night, John thought of a new technique to try.

John thought that his silver cord attached him to his soul, and so he imagined himself rolling the cord up, or reeling it in, like you would do with a fishing line, or a hose reel.

This worked, and John kept hauling his cord in towards him bit by bit at a time. John was pulling his soul towards himself. When John could feel that his soul was now very close to him, John felt that there seemed to be a barrier in between them which prevented him from pulling his soul right up to himself.

This barrier seemed like that it was like a glass wall.

John could see his soul on the other side of this wall, and he touched his soul then from his side, seemingly sort of contacting his soul somehow through the barrier, despite its continuing presence there between them.

John knew, or more he had heard, that if the silver cord is broken, this means your physical body will die. Maybe, he thought now to himself, this glass-like, seemingly impenetrable, barrier stayed in place until you died.

John kept thinking more about the length of his cord then. It seemed to be quite a long one, taking him a fair while to wind it all in.

Maybe, John postulated to himself thoughtfully, the length of your life is related to the length of your silver cord. This cord perhaps measures the length of particular your life-line. It must be a different length for every life, John further speculated now to himself.

"The silver cord links you to your higher self, or to your soul, and its length portrays for you, or represents the length of your present life," John concluded to himself.

The silver cord. What exactly is it exactly then?

"My silver cord - the link between my body and my spirit - was extremely sensitive. It was what allowed me to sense dreamscapes at a distance. It could also snap me back into my skin."

This quote is from the British writer, Samantha Shannon. Her main genre of writing is her paranormal writing.

Is there really such a think as the silver cord that connects us humans to our soul then?

This cord is an energetic portal of tunnelling convalescence (i.e. it contributes to your spiritual well-being, and to the spiritual health of your body whilst you are living in this physical body) that moves between the worlds like a wormhole, and yes, it can connect your soul to you, when you become aware of it in your mind, (as John did in my story) but nevertheless it is really always, always there too.

And when this energy syphon is blocked off or cut off, you often then will suffer a dis-connective feeling to your higher, or to your real self, and this can stifle your creativity in your being real in following your goals, and in the completing of your spiritual mission for this life.

The cord finally closes off all together, and it then becomes in a way the tunnel of light that you are pulled up when you die as well.

This is the same tunnel that many experience whilst alive in a near death experience.

They are pulled or pushed up the tunnel towards the light, or to an entity re-splendid in this light, who really is only ever really just however their own soul, portraying itself in this way to them.

It is all you in a way. God is one, and so are you. Everything else are mere facets of yourself within God being also God within you.

John had a soul, and his soul had John

The next Sunday morning, we find John attending the Sunday morning mass at Saint Francis's church in Jainville.

Apart from John's visualisation exercise, he had not really slept much at all, last night. Perhaps he had only gotten a few minutes sleep during the whole night.

After the usual starting prayers, and readings, the parish priest began to speak to his captured audience.

"This sermon is about souls", he said.

The priest then asked his small congregation to think about what a soul could be, and then he had put this open-ended question to his audience.

"Is man composed of only these three parts, body, mind, and soul, but if this is really so, where does his spirit fit in here?"

Father Joshua Morgan then began his sermon. He endeavoured to answered his own question then.

"The spirit of man is also the spirit of God.

There is only one spirit, but man has a body, a mind, and a soul. The body of man is physical while alive, but it becomes ethereal like that of an angel's after he dies physically. His mind is attached to the physical brain but this mind is also part of the universal mind, part of which has been given to each man, but holographically this part also retains the whole mind within itself too.

A man's soul is the God part of themselves which God places in the physical body so that part of himself can be real to the man.

What is commonly referred to as the human spirit is different from being your soul. It is not the holy spirit either.

The holy spirit is one of the triple heads of God. The human spirit is an acronym for the energy that is alive in him when he is living from love. The human spirit dies when love of life dies, and it really is all that simple."

John had tried to listen intently to what was being said, but he had had a rather restless night, (in fact, he hadn't slept very much really at all), and so after only about ten minutes of his listening to Father Joshua's rather monotone voice, he drifted off into a light sleep.

John was lightly dreaming about what the priest had just said.

He was thinking about how the mind might be merged in the body, or how it could be attached to the body.

How is the soul attached to the human body, was another question that he had had?

John could hear some other voices in his head now too.

John has a sermon within a sermon

John then heard a voice talking to him from what seemed to be from a very long distance away.

This is what it said to him.

"The soul lives in another world really, but it is attached by what is known as the silver cord to the human body. The mind carries messages between the body and the soul, and the heart is the initial receiver. It feels the message arriving before the ego opens it for itself so to speak. Your ego then either hands the message on as it is, or more often, it will jumble it in some way before passing it onto the brain for actioning, or mulling over."

The voice then asked him a series of questions:

"Is your personality a part of your soul? Where do your emotions fit into the equation here? How does God's spirit link into you through your soul, your heart, your mind, and your body?"

Just as quickly then, the voice went on to answer these questions like this:

"The spirit of God descends onto the body but it has first touched your soul and this touching of your soul opens your heart which then receives the spirit as love, and the mind receives it as signs, wonders, gifts, or as just plain feelings, or heightened emotions."

John was entranced deeply within these words, but he then was shaken rudely awake by someone handing him the collection plate.

John dug deep into his pockets and came up with a few coins that he tossed unceremoniously into the plate, and he then handed it on to the next person in his aisle.

After the service, John drove his prize Bentley home again, and made himself a sandwich for his lunch.

John got up from his kitchen table, and he opened up his old bible at random. He found that he had opened it at the book of Thessalonians. He read this passage, see below, and he realised then that this teaching of Paul's just about verified all that the voice had told him that day.

1 Thessalonians 5.23 reads:

"May the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."

Had John just imagined hearing that voice?

Well there is an old saying that John had heard somewhere or other that goes something like this.

"Your imagination is the eye of your soul."

“Imagination is the eye of the soul”, is the actual quote, that John was thinking of here.

This quote is from the French writer, and moralist, Joseph Joubert (1754 to 1824).

John knew that it was his soul that had been talking to him, and that it could only ever tell him the truth that it itself knew from what God's holy spirit had shown to it.

John had a soul, and his soul had John. They were not only joined at the hip, but they were also connected together by a silver cord.

Thought provoking Spirited.

We should keep our minds open to receive messages that are transmitted to our soul from our Creator and a closed mind is anathema to being human. There are continuous messages that guide our living, existence, and how we react determines our further journey.

I am intrigued John tossing few coins into the collection plate and then taking off in his prized Bentley; is there a connection to his problem with his sleep? siva

thanks for commenting siva, yes, perhaps his meanness/stinginess also carries over to his sleep. He expects too many benefits from it for nothing...everything costs us in coin in one way or another, we must pay for our experiences.

Thanks for the time and effort you put into this great share ~ Spirited. I believe that each one of us has a call from our Creator to worship and obey Him.

There is a very powerful statement shown in the Gospel of John which says:
God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. John 4:24

There seems to be a great connection between that verse and Genesis 1:27 which says : So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

That leads me to believe that we are 'spirits' ~ who live in a physical body ~ and we have a soul which ~ I have been taught ~ consists of the mind, the will, and the emotions.

Richest blessings to you ~ Spirited.

thanks Helen,

I have my own ideas about all of this.

To me, your soul is the God part of you which is comprised of love this is what makes you, you.

It has various attributes such as the will, and the mind, but the other things/attachments/parts of you and your body, like your emotions, and thoughts, are more like your body. They are a body within a body, (That is our other bodies. We have a physical body, an emotional body, a mental body, etc., etc.) , so to speak, and your spirit is the same as God’s spirit, a moving energy reservoir of energising love's movement, whereas a soul is more a fixed portion of love residing in you as you.

When you allow spirit to live in you, this soul is continually replenished and refreshed from new love filling it continually in its elemental construct of being holding vessel of love, which is you.

Thanks ~ Spirited. You're very kind to comment on my comments. I think possibly what renders me unable to fully see your point is the New Age element that seems to be dominant.

Thanks again for a superbly written article.

Abundant blessings to you and your household.

yes, thanks Helen I was involved with the New Age religions for thirty or more years.

I am out of them now though, and more thinking my own ways through things instead of being overly influenced by their ideas.

I love that saying, spirited, "the imagination is the eye of the soul" I have never heard it before. I will never forget it.
