Smashwords for the win

Ever thought about publishing on Smashwords? Ever wondered what "formatting" was involved and if you could do it. Well I thought I would ease minds by letting you how I got on, in a new world of formatting.

So you have a book to publish

The first thing to realise when printed a book on Smashwords is that it is not a book. Now, what I mean when I say that is that you need to forget about page breaks and page numbers. An eBook really is a different way of thinking for a print book lover such as myself.

Once you manage to get your head around that part it gets easier to deal with. Smashwords makes it really easy for you IF you follow their Style Guideline booklet.

I had never properly formatted an eBook before so I opened the style guide and went through it step by step. It took me 6 hours but I highly doubt it will take me that long the next time :)

Why spend 6 hours on it?

This was my first attempt ever at uploading an eBook and Smashwords have certain rules before you can be entered into their premium catalogue. (which gets you a wider audience)

I also want my readers to receive a book that looks as close to a print book as possible.
It has to be professional and look like something they would set on their bookshelf (so to speak)

Mainly, however, I like to finish what I start all in one go where I can and I had the spare 6 hours yesterday to go through the Style guidelines page by page and set it up properly. I highly doubt it will ever take me that long again as I now have a template set up specifically for Smashwords now so that cuts down half the time. I was also mixing Poetry with Short Stories so it did complicate things a little.

I will advise however; In my case at least, the formatting is all Word based. so if you use word to type up your articles or story's take a peak around, there are things in word I was not even aware of until getting my book formatted.

I would also advise to strip down your work to the bare bones by copying it into note pad and then pasting it into a brand new template set up in Times New roman font 12pt :)

Would I use Smashwords again?

I most definitely would. After following the guidelines, I did get my book uploaded and there were no errors reported at the initial upload (which I did test with a deliberate error and it shows up immediately). Everything I needed to know was in word already so it was just a case of finding the features, which the style guide shows you if you can find it anyway.

Overall I would rate Smashwords formatting requirements as logical and simple changes to your work and after checking the majority of formats I am happy with the results.

If you want to see the finished results you can take a look here and let me know what you think or if you have used Smashwords for your own eBooks.

Yes, Faith, if one intends to publish successfully on Smashwords, reading the Style Guide, cover-to-cover is the way to start.
