So Long, Sue

A fun little rhyming poem that puts a dark but humorous turn on death in the workplace. Please do not take this seriously, you'll enjoy it so much more if you don't -- although it does attempt to make a serious point.

So Long, Sue

By James Grob

Sue dropped dead on a Wednesday
The perfect day to go
Because Thursday’s just so busy
And Tuesday’s just so slow
And Monday everybody’s
Just getting back to work
And Friday’s the only day they let us
Wear Hawaiian shirts.

Her death caused much confusion
In human resources, no doubt.
She had clocked in at work that morning
But died before punching out.
So an inter-office memo
Was sent out for our perusal
“For future reference, no one dies
Without a manager’s approval.”

We each chipped in a dollar
To send her family flowers
But the memorial service at the church
Was held during business hours
So the corporate heads in charge of things
Said we couldn’t take off that day
“The department’s too short-handed now
Since Sue has passed away.”

So now her desk just sits there
Next to her empty chair
We all walk past it every day
Because the bathroom’s over there.
The more outspoken among us claim,
“This damn job is what killed poor Sue.”
But the rest of us know all too well
This job has killed us, too.

Never an easy time or place or way to die. Death is universal anyway and everyone is replaceable over time- siva
