Songs on the Monsoon

My translation of a Tagore song and a Nazrul song. To most of us, the rainy season is just a season of rain. For poets, however, there may be more in it than meets the eye. How do Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam, the two brightest luminaries in the firmament of a-thousand-year-old Bangla literature, discern the rainy season in these two songs?

Translation of a Tagore song

Come wilt thou the verdant and beautiful
And bring along the pleasure of thy company
That steals the heat and thirst away.
Thy love-sick woman awaits thee.

Spreading her aching heart
At the shady drenched feet of Tomal-groves,
She waits with sad languishing eyes.

With a garland of blossoming bakul she waits
Amidst a melody of reunion
Ringing in her compound.

Come along with thy cymbals
To ring it with the rhythms of a nimble dance.
And with the tinkle of the tinkling bangles.
And with the anklet jingling.

Translation of a Nazrul song

Brunette and slender a maiden am I
With the colours of the cloud.
Dripping comes the fountain of rains from my look.

Clouds in the heavens beat their drums
As the kadam- and screwpine woods bedeck their flowery tray;
The denuded earth is now with crops gay.

The east wind waves my lock of sable hair
With clouds I cry while lightning is my laughter
And dancing go my feet with rain's beat.
