A spring storm reminds me of another time when thunder and lightning was nothing more than bowling pins and bowling balls.

Spring storms and bowling balls

I was on my way home from work and a few drops appeared on my windshield. I pushed the gas a little more, wanting to beat the rain home. A few minutes later I pulled into my driveway but not before the spring storm hit. I decided the best thing for me to do was to stay in the car and just wait the rain out. As I was sitting watching the down pour and listening to the gentle thumping on the roof of my car my mind wandered back to another spring storm.

The thunder boomed again as the rain came out of nowhere drenching me and my Papa, but he picked me up and hurried under the carport. “Well that was refreshing.” Papa said as he put me down, and then ran his hands through his hair spraying water everywhere. I giggled as the cold drops of water hit me. Then a streak of lightning and another loud thunder clap hit. Me being only three at the time scurried close to Papa and grabbed onto his leg as I watched the storm.

Papa chuckled as he squatted down and took my hands. “Now don’t tell me a big girl like you is scared of a little thunder.” Crack … Boom… As more thunder struck and I threw my arms around Papa’s neck. He put his arms around me and picked me up again.

“It’s just a little thunder nothing to worry about. Let me tell you a little secret about thunder and lightning.” Papa said as he walked over to an old metal chair he kept under the carport. He sat down and put me on his lap then began again. “A very good friend of mine told me long time ago that the Gods love to bowl.” He stated with a grin.

I scrunched up my face. “Bowl? You’re fibbing Papa.” I stated having completely forgotten about the storm.

“I am not. That’s what he told me. He said that they made special pins and balls. When they roll the balls down the lane you can hear it, Rumble… Rumble… Rumble. Then the ball hits the pins and that’s when we see the lightning spark in the sky. But the lightning is so fast that it gets here before loud crack of thunder. So when you hear thunder you always know that the gods are bowling.”

Just then the lightning streaked across the sky then came the loud clap of thunder hit again, but this time it wasn’t so scary.

“But what about all the people, do they get to play too?” I asked

“Of course, I’m sure there are lots of people up there that go bowling.” He answered “But the storm is over and I am sure Granny has dinner ready so we better get in the house.”

A clap of thunder brought me back to the present and I smiled knowing Papa had just rolled a strike.
