Standing in the Rain

I was at a Remembrance Ceremony and it was pouring hard; these actions and thoughts came to my mind

The rain poured from the sky in a never ending stream,
Soaking all who had come to Remember those who,
Had given their lives for us , so that we may live
In a free world?

The poppies, still bright in the worsening gloom,
Reminding us of so many who had died protecting
The elusive democracy that we were,
Supposed to have?

The many “dignitaries” who were there, so solemn, so dry,
Protected under a myriad of coloured umbrellas.
The Cadets, standing like statues, seemingly unworried by,
The cold and the wet.

Yes I too had my protection from the rain;
The thought then came vividly in my mind as I lowered my umbrella,
Getting wet in the rain was little cost, considering what,
Those who died had given!

I have been writing poetry for a few years now and use it as a release for all types of feelings. I do not follow any set rules poetry as I find I cannot get the feeling correct if I use the rules.

Thanks Helen, the two cadets on guard were very wet and very cold but they didn't move. They were very highly praised at the nd.
