Stone Mountain and Mt. Rushmore were both started by the same sculptor. Take a look back and see how these two monuments came to be.

Stone Mountain, Georgia

The United Daughters of the Confederacy came up with the idea of a Confederate monument in the early 1900s and Stone Mountain was started in 1917. Gutzon Borglum was hired as the carving consultant and then as the sculptor. Funding was always a problem and The Great War—World War I to us—delayed the project even further until 1923.

Mt. Rushmore, South Dakota

Inspired by the work being done on Stone Mountain, state historian Doane Robinson wanted a similar monument is the Black Hills of South Dakota. Robinson attempted to contact Lorado Taft to do the project. When Robinson was unable to reach Taft, he approached Borglum. After the second meeting with Robinson, Borglum agreed to work on the South Dakota project.

Switching projects

Borglum left the Stone Mountain project in 1925 and was replaced by sculptor Augustus Lukeman.

Borglum started on Mt. Rushmore in 1927. Here, too, funding was a problem and there were delays. Borglum died in early 1941 and didn't live to see the project completed. It was finished by his son, Lincoln Borglum, later that same year.

Back in Georgia

Back in Georgia, Stone Mountain remained incomplete. A lack of interest and money were the main reasons. Finally, with renewed interest, funding was secured, a new sculptor—Walter Hancock—was hired and the the project was finished in 1968.

Today, Stone Mountain, Georgia, is part of a state park where Confederate heroes Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson can be seen.

Half way across the country, Mt. Rushmore, South Dakota, which is part of the National Parks Service, displays presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.
