Subtle Memories

A practice in memory of consciousness, I take independently experienced sensations described on their own terms and piece them together into a single memory of someone I've loved in the past.

Subtle Memories

Tiny sounds,
I can picture you
walking behind me
all from your toes
dragging on the carpet.

Tiny sights,
I noticed you
roll your shoulders back
to work on correct posture -
it was too hard
and you were
too comfortable
slouching in that

Tiny sensations,
my forearm
touched your back briefly
and it sent a shock
of self-conscious
up my cliff face
spine to the
young forest
erect on the back
of my neck.

Trees ablaze
in seconds.

Tiny smells,
like the I wore this
yesterday comfort
in fireside naps
and early rising
smoke between
vigorous full belly
laughs and laundry.
Nestled in the bosom
of the green sea.

A tiny taste
is left, like
some fruit
you ate earlier
but it won't leave
your mind, although
it's long been gone.
My lips
become chapped
while I enjoy
the residue.
