This is a typical sunny South African Sunday for my family.

Waking Up

Eyes slowly adjust to the natural light of the rising sun outside your bedroom window. The attractive smell of egg and bacon gently sizzling in the kitchen fills your nose. You are awake, your senses become alive as your brain registers that it is a routine sunny Sunday morning in the middle of February.

I Hate Sundays

If any of you have read my previous pages, you will know that I am a very opinionated person, and this piece is no exception. I hate Sundays. I hate the way I feel on this day: bored, lazy, frustrated, moody. 90 percent of the reasoning behind this deep hatred is the fact that yet another week at school will commence in less that 24 hours from the time I wake up. School is generally not my idea of fun, as you may well know.

Although Sunday is one of my enemies, I will still care to explain how it works as it is quite interesting. The morning begins with complements from the chef (my dad). Sometimes the amount of egg and bacon is only enough for one person (himself) but sometimes, when he feels generous, he cooks all the egg and bacon we have in the house for the rest of my rather large family. At around 9 am my mom usually goes off to church, alone, as she has given up asking whether or not the rest of us want to go with her because the answer is always a definite no. For the rest of the morning, I sit procrastinating while my homework and studies sit patiently waiting for me to start. I do not start, not until about 10 pm when I have finally gained the inner mental strength to face them. Mid-afternoon is the only part of the day I look forward to its time for a Braai.(similar to what you Americans call a barbecue, the only difference is ours is 100 times better) You are all probably thinking that I am some typical, Afrikaans South African, but this is not true. English people braai here too! By 8 o'clock the family is seated in the TV room to watch the 8'clock movie on M-Net channel 101. That would be a typical Sunday in my South African family.
