Thank You, Whoever You Are: One Hundred Thousand Views on Wikinut

“If the wrong reader comes across the words, they will remain just words. But for the right readers, your vision blooms off the page and is absorbed into their minds like smoke, where it will re-form, whole and alive, fully adapted to its new environment.” ― Mary Gaitskill

I Appreciate the Views

My grandmother believed in showing appreciation and recognizing the individuals who helped us change, mature or reach our goals. I wrote about comments and reflections in December when I reached 50,000 views.

Five months later, I have over 100,000 and want to express my appreciation to the readers.

Another Wikinut Milestone

So, for the 100,000 people who viewed my articles, “Thank You"; however, if it was only one or two readers in my family who furiously clicked a whole bunch – hats off to you as well.

From Zero Views to Now

While I am far behind Madan G. Singh, with 1,000,000 views, I am nonetheless pleased. When I started writing for Wikinut in September 2013, I was not certain of the best approach regarding topics, length, formatting, and placement of images for Wikinut.

Since I like to understand a site if I am writing for it, I spent 2 weeks reviewing the Chief Nut’s articles – after all, if someone founded a company and then gave directions on how to be successful working for it, I thought it would be prudent to research his preferences. Short, to the point and a must read for all of us, The Life of a Wikinut Page.

I wrote for another site and knew that even something as simple as formatting the content, or adding images, would change from site to site and it did. We insert content in a section here, where on other sites, it is referenced as something else.

Knowing terminology for each site might not seem like a good investment in your time, however, understanding what the Chief Nut wants in formatting, sections and images is important if you want to stand out at Wikinut.

Besides the Chief Nut, There are the Wikinut Moderators

Our moderators do a commendable job of not just moderating our articles, but writing their own as well. Each has a decidedly different outlook on topics and I enjoy all four of them for different reasons.

However, when it comes to their job at Wikinut, they all agree:

• Take the time to write the best article you can at this time
• Use interesting images
• Correct the mistakes, learn to edit, revise and proof your writing
• Be original

I would encourage you to visit their pages, read their articles, and learn from them. So who are these stellar writers/moderators/helpful comment generators?

Jonhhydod
Mark Gordon Brown
Peter B. Gibblett
Steve Kinsman

Rejected, Featured or Star Pages

Wikinut has a point system for accepting articles for publication. If they do not meet the minimum, the moderators will reject them and give you helpful comments to correct the article. Mark Gordon Brown wrote the definitive article, Why is my Wikinut Article Being Rejected that outlines exactly why an article is rejected.

Even when the article is not rejected, it may not merit a Star rating. Peter Gibblet’s article, Pay Attention to Moderator Comments to Improve your Writing is full of helpful information on improving article status.

Although I thought I had paid attention when I started writing, it was not until I spent time writing, then more time editing, revising and THEN publishing that I increased my Star Pages.

Aim for Star Page Status

Moving from a Featured Article to a Star Article gives people confidence that the article will have good content, attractive images and is worth their time. Mark Gordon Brown’s article, How to Get a Star Page on Wikinut increases your opportunity to receive more Star Pages. If you want that rating, this is a guideline for receiving them.

Following the directions, I see improvement in my own writings. Of my 148 articles, 81 are Star Pages; however, since December when I published my 100th article, of the remaining 48 articles, 44 are Star pages.

Promoting the Site and Each Other

While we write alone, we are part of the community at Wikinut and need to promote each other to increase the overall rating of Wikinut and by extension, ourselves.

Think about this logically, if I told you the secret of making a million dollars in a day, you tried it and it worked for you; then you told someone else about it, you would look helpful and rather clever. It works the same way with promoting others. When you promote a good article, either your own or another writer's, you increase your social capital and look knowledgeable. Some people do not promote because they are unsure of how to use Twitter, Facebook or Google +. The article, Promoting other Writers: How it Benefits You describes the process and the article, Views, Comments and Reflections outlines how to use Twitter effectively.

Write then Tweet for Yourself and Others

Search Twitter for people interested in your subjects. I typically write about addictions, recovery and writing tips, so I started with those categories and expanded as my interest and knowledge about Twitter increased. Three simple steps are:

• Search on Twitter for people with your interests – follow them
• Re-tweet interesting posts from those you follow
Learn to write in 140 characters to grab someone’s attention

I Get Paid How and When?

While I write to educate, inform, and share my opinions, I also enjoy payment for my efforts. However, I know that none of us is going to get rich quick writing for Wikinut. It takes time to build a following and to convert that to some advertising clicks and It takes time to build a following and to convert that to some advertising clicks and revenue.

However, it will happen; it has happened for me –oh not the get rich part; however, I have been paid by Wikinut.

Wonder what your options are for payments; again, leave it to the Chief Nut to define our options as well as Mark Gordon Brown’s recent article, Are You Using the Wikinut Referral System to Earn More Money?

Who are We?

Most of us have a standard introduction to Wikinut in our closing to promote the site to other writers. In addition, when we get new writers, a suggestion from Peter B. Gibblett is to let us know who you are in his article, A Supreme Welcome to New Wikinuts: Let us Know who you are!

When you introduce yourself, or are the Writer of the Day, I make an effort to read, comment and follow. I am following many people now who have exposed me to politics in other countries, philosophies that differ, art, theater, and human-interest short stories that touch my heart.

Steve Kinsman is my go to for positive and uplifting as well as the crashing back to earth stories of how we are destroying our world.

The Community at Wikinut

I do not think the sense of community at Wikinut can be overstated. So, who lives in my Wikinut world? The list is long and varied, however, these writers helped me feel welcome when I got here, or are a resource to help me improve, so "Thank You" to them as well:

Still Falling Down, Getting Up and Writing at Wikinut

In a recent article, Fall Down, Get Up, Write: Improving at Wikinut, I stated that I consider this my writing home. The opportunities for writing are expanding for me, due in part to the commitment that I made when I joined Wikinut to be productive here.

I am in development on an addiction web site; so much of my focus lately has been on that. However, my articles about the craft of writing and writing effectively will continue to be here at Wikinut.

Wikinut is my “writing about writing” home and Delicia Powers articulated many of my feelings in her article, A Solution: Proud to be a Wikinut.

Write for Wikinut and Find Your Viewers

I hope that this will encourage you to check out Wikinut; see if your topics, ideas and style would be a good fit.

You may find that 1 reader or those same 100,000 who viewed mine; however, without writing, you will never tell the story that someone needs.

Good afternoon Phyl, sorry about your loss. Yes, It is a question of allocation of resources - my brain only processes semi-well for x number of hours a day, and the web site is more time consuming than we realized it would be - 11,000 treatment data fields is a lot to verify besides writing and editing other author's offerings on addiction. I've got about 6 or 7 articles that might make it to Wikinut in the next two weeks. Also, had the flu for about 5 days this week - 102 temp and so antibiotics and bed rest - not much got done at all. I'll be back. Thanks for asking. ~Marilyn

Good to hear from you -- and thanks for the LinkedIn-vite. I'm not as active on there as I should be... I think I need a secretary to keep up with all the social stuff I'm supposed to be keeping up with!!
Sorry you've had the flu/been sick. I do think the flu and colds should limit themselves to months with an "r" and allergies should only be in months without. Sadly, germs disagree and multiply without my blessing. Guess I'm not as all-powerful as I thought! (Can you hear me laughing?)

Good evening, Crystalheart, way to go on your Star Page. It all starts with one. Write, edit, proof and let it sit a day - that is the best advice I got and give. Taking the time to let an article be fresh when you re-read it helps you catch all the pesky mistakes. Again, congrats on your first Star and I hope you get many more.~Marilyn
