Mike sighed and sat at the kitchen table. He loved Nancy alot and was concerned about her obsession with the old derelict high school. She would not ever talk about it openly. It was as if she was keeping something from him, some dark secret about what was there down below, or worst still, inside its premises.

That Old Derelict High School, Chapter One

Even after all these years, that old derelict high school, which gave Nancy the creeps as a child, every time she passed it by, was still standing, as if announcing its presence. Strangely enough, it had seemed ancient even then. She would shudder when friends dared her to run her fingers along its large stone bricks, which had moss grown over them. She remembered on one or two occasions, seeing other children playing 'i dare you' and climbing down right into the ground, which was many feet below. In her deepest darkest nightmares, she was convinced that whatever was down there, was the essence of pure evil, from night to dawn. The reality was that nothing ever seemed to change about it.
‘You’re not anaemic are you, Mike?’ She asked, as she served their meal.
'Stop avoiding the question.' He replied, placing his arms tightly around her.
Nancy freed herself and retreated back, feeling nervous and irritable.
'Okay! If you must know, then no, I definitely don't want you going there again.'
Mike sighed and sat at the kitchen table. He loved Nancy alot and was concerned about her obsession with the old derelict high school. She would not ever talk about it openly. It was as if she was keeping something from him, some dark secret about what was there down below, or worst still, inside its premises. It's shuttered rooms and windows added to the menace and intimidating factor. She had told him once how she saw a light on, seeming from out of one of those very shuttered windows, and distant moaning sounds. That's what aroused his curiosity. And so, one night, recently, when he was awoken by Nancy's loud screaming, that was the turning point. He had made up his mind to finally go there, once and for all, to find out who, or what, was there.
'I've already made up my mind, Nancy; I'm leaving first thing in the morning.'

'No, Mike; I don't want you to go. Please stay.' Said Nancy, placing her arms around him tightly.
'Look, please don't worry about me. I'll be fine. It's not as if I'm going half way around the world. It's scotland for goodness sake.'
Nancy fell back on the chair, with a lost look on her face. She began to fumble and fidget, a sign of nervousness when things were not going the way she would like. Mike stared at her then knelt down on the floor beside her. He held her hands softly and said,
'Look at it from this point of view. If I don't go, then your health will continue to get worse, mentally and physically, just thinking about that place. And to be very frank and honest, I've tolerated enough of your recurring delusions. Besides, you've aroused my curiosity, so please, dear, just agree and let me go.' He stroked her hands gently and she looked at him eye to eye then slowly nodded.
'Good girl. Now, I'm going to get some rest as I need to be up early in the morning. Goodnight.' He kissed her and left for the bedroom.
The following morning, Nancy awoke to find her side of the bed was empty. She had come up a short while after Mike who was in deep sleep, so she was puzzled as to how and when he had left. As she stood up to make the bed, she moved the pillows to one side and saw a note lying on Mike's side and read it aloud,
'Dear Nancy, Please forgive me for not staying back, but there's something I did not mention to you. I already went there once before, without you knowing. At the time, I was actually climbing down the old school's brick wall and as I jumped to land, I felt someone or something grab my left leg and bite into my ankle. I fell and was unconscious. When I awoke, I felt a piercing and pinching pain on the right side of my neck too. There was fresh blood. Now I have to go back and find out. Wish me well. With Love, Mike.'
Nancy scrunched up the note and flung it on the carpet, absolutely furious and in tears.
'He betrayed my trust. All this time, he was lying to me.'
Suddenly her eyes widened in horror as she realised that tonight, for the first time in her life, she would be alone.
'Oh no.'
