The Age Of Progress...?

Here it comes around again..that dreaded weekly food shop, where you take your life in your hands as you navigate the isles with a dodgy trolley, and a lot of stressed out parents, while little Johnny screams at the top of his lungs that he wants the loo...Get the picture...? It's enough to make anyone order on-line!

The Age Of Progress..? Supermarket Blues..

I'm off to do the Weekly shop,
to join the frantic throng..
Armed with me list of what I need,
and a back so nice and strong!
I know me pennies will not stretch,
to luxuries so rare...
I know that I must count the cost,
and spend with extra care..

You meet some types in this here store,
intent on drawing blood..
I fear the Supermarket Rage,
when someone will not budge..
And pushchairs become lethal..
Trolleys used as battering rams,
as you are pushed and jostled,
reaching for that joint of Lamb!

As if this was not bad enough,
to make you so frustrated..
Those added pennies in the pound,
means prices are inflated..
Give me the days of village shops,
and service with a smile..
Where friendly neighbours stop and chat,
and linger for a while.

But Supermarkets dominate,
and Corner stores are few..
They call this the Age of Progress,
as an Empire they accrue..
So girding my loins, into the fray,
at the checkout, I could weep..
And to think I have to undergo..
this shopping hell again, next week!

Never thought about the concept of 'Supermarket Rage' before. But, yes, it's with us - big style!

Hi, dearest friend. I hope all is well with you as you've been away for quite a while. Be careful when shopping for groceries. Trolley rage has become rampant these days. Love this poem. You're always my fave.:)

LOL Songbird: Many a true word spoken in jest eh? At least I think I detected some sardonic humour in there. I did the mid-week shop this morning in the comparative peace and quiet of my local Waitrose: such a pleasant alternative to Sainsbury's noisy nursey... I mean supermarket.

It sounds like shopping is a chore no matter where we live.

Super stores are like machines, the corner stores are more than merely stores for shopping, it's a kind of fellow feelings and human touch too....
