Thoughts on giving and how it can benefit both the giver and the recipient.

Should we give at all?

That there is an art to giving, is not something that is widely understood, so lets consider a few questions that need to be answered if the gift is to be of benefit to both the giver and the receiver.
The first and most basic question must be:
Should we give at all?
I think that the majority would agree that we should. Christians will remember the words of Christ himself “Give to him that ask of thee”.
An even older teaching goes this way:
“Rivers do not drink their own water, nor do trees eat their own fruit, nor do rain clouds eat the grains reared by them.”
Supposing than that we agree that giving is
something that we should do, the second question might be:
When should we give?
There is an old story of two brothers who were walking down a road when they came upon a beggar. When the oldest brother told the beggar to come to his house tomorrow, his younger sibling became very excited, thinking that his brother had conquered death, seeing that he knew that he would be here tomorrow!
The answer to our question then becomes that we should give now, since none of us knows whether or not we will be here tomorrow.

Give with a feeling of gratitude.

The next question is about how much to give, and the answer might lie in our understanding of the prayer of St. Francis…” It is in giving that we receive”…
Now let us consider what to give, since it is not only money that can be given. It could be a flower or even a smile.
It is not how much one gives but how one gives that really matters. When you give a smile to a stranger, it may be the only good thing that he/she has received in days or even weeks.
You can give anything but you must give with your heart.
But to whom should we give?
Often we avoid giving by finding fault with the person who is seeking. However, being judgmental and rejecting a person on the presumption that he may not be the most deserving is not justified.
Give than without judgement.
Next we have to answer the question, How do we give?
Most importantly, lets ensure that the receiver does not feel humiliated, nor we feel proud for giving. While giving follow the advice, ’Let not your left hand know what your right hand does.
Giving without publicity and fanfare is the highest form of charity.
Give and never regret giving.
Perhaps some may be wondering about how much we should leave for our children?
It was probably Warren Buffett who said it best:
“Leave your kids enough to do anything, but not enough to do nothing“.

Always remember that what we give never really belonged to us. We come to this world with nothing and will go with nothing. The thing given was only with us for a temporary period. Why then take pride in giving away something which really did not belong to us? Give with grace and with a feeling of gratitude. When you help someone in need, give it before he asks for it; for if you place him under the necessity of stretching out his hand, you take away from him his self-respect which is worth more than the value of anything you can give.

So well told, Kingwell - your words touch the core of the issue and my heart. How much to give? for the rich "till it hurts their pockets". The poor are so generous in sharing what they have and that is the secret behind their ready smile. I maintain - the endless greed of few spoils our party - siva

Your article is touching and very true, however the reality is that most of us do not give or even know hoe to give. I hope people all over the world start to learn to give more.

Most of us are not able to help others with money but there are so many other ways to give. It is true that many do not know how to give nor do they know the joy that comes from giving. Thank you for visiting my friend. I will return the favor. Blessings.
