The Azuris’ Euro 2012 Campaign

The Italians are going into the Euro 2012 with their tails behind their legs, as their loss against the USA will still be fresh in their minds. They have a lot of work to do in the central defense, but can the magic feet of Balotelli make up the difference?

The Blue Brigade

The last game Italy play was something of an embarrassment. The former world cup holders were beaten one nil at home by USA, an outcome that very few would have predicted. It stands to prove that Italy certainly have plenty of work to do in their central defense, which Clint Dempsey was able to split with ease.

They definitely have the striking power in Mario Balotelli, a contender for the Euro 2012 top goalscorer title, to make up for defensive problems in the backline. His antics in the Premier League would best be left behind as his national team mates are not going to stand for any showboating in a competition where all eleven need to work together to produce goals, and stop them when necessary.

The Italian Euro 2012 team is placed in Group C, which they share with current champions Spain. The other two teams, Croatia and Ireland, don’t really measure up to Italy and Spain, so a qualification for the Italians is not much to gawk at. What will be very interesting to watch out for will be when Spain and Italy inevitably lock horns, as they (Italy) were knocked out by Spain in the 2008 quarter-finals in a penalty shoot-out.

On the Up and Up

Italy looked very, very good in qualifying stages. Their striker, Antonio Cassano, scored six goals in this stage, only to be shortly after diagnosed with what may or may not have been a stroke. He is showing what AC Milan (his Serie A side) call a ‘marked improvement’, but whether or not he gets to contribute another six goals in the group stages is yet to be seen.

Another star for Italy, Giuseppe Rossi, is possibly out for the competition. He was put out of the game for six months in November of last year when he snapped knee ligaments. After three months of recovery, he hopes that he will be match fit in time for the UEFA Euro 2012, but whether or not he is, and whether or not he gets to play is totally up to the coach.

The Italian coach, Cesare Prandelli, has admitted a troubling opinion, that his side might have a rather tough time progressing from Group C, which will certainly affect Euro 2012 betting. Prandelli feels that this group is a tough one, and no wonder – the current Champions, who won every single one of their qualifying matches, share Group C with them. A team which might otherwise be ignored, Ireland is coached by Italian Giovanni Trapattoni, which makes the Italian coach all the more worried, that he may have some dangerous insights into their play style.

Italy kick off their campaign with one of the most exciting Euro 2012 fixtures - a fitting first game against current European and world champions, Spain.
