The Beagle Puppy

A true poem .about a Beagle hunting dog that didn't get the freedom to which he was entitled. Experienced hunters no less said not to make a pet out of him or he will never be a good hunting dog. Even though I raised him this way, I learned that this is far from true on future animals I had.

The Beagle Puppy

A pure bred Beagle puppy dog
so frisky and so mild
playing freely all day long
just like a little child
don’t raise him as a pet they said
for this dog will never hunt
and if you let him play with kids
his instincts you will stunt

It was a foolish thing to hear
but that’s the way t’would be
the little dog was kept alone
nobody would he see
at the tender age of six months old
his instincts did set in
so in the woods I took him
his training to begin

He left my side for a time
and thru the trees did go
in just a few short hours
he was hunting like a pro
then just a short time later
I gave my dog away
to another avid hunter
who lived around the bay

I got another Beagle
and raised her as a pet
she grew up with the children
and this Pup was loved you bet
She soon developed instincts
at six months old or so
and she’d go hunting Rabbits
even when I didn’t go

Now don’t let other people
tell you how to raise your Pup
more likely he’ll be hunting
before the year is up
and if you really love him
you’ll raise him as a pet
that’s one mistake that I did make
and always will regret
