Part two of the short story series I'm writing. Charles's brother elaborates on his reasons for renewing contact.

The Nightmare Begins

Charles stumbles into the kitchen and begins the espresso making ritual. As he sips and thinks, his mind floats slowly back to the offer his brother had made him.

Sitting across from him in that coffee shop, Charles couldn't help but feel curious about the reason had chosen to resurface now, after eleven years of supposed death. He had never before contacted Charles directly. True, there where the postcards in the meantime; but still.

“About that job, Charles...” Duncan always was impatient, “it's in your best interest to at least hear what I have to say.”

“Why? Give me one good reason why I should.”

“Didn't it pay off well for you in the past? I am the reason you have the job you have now.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Don't you remember? The postcard that suggested applying where you did. I sent the postcards, remember? And I made sure your application was successful.”

“I don't buy it. Private security firms go for ex military guys all time. I didn't need your help. Besides, why? Why would you help me? Unless it's for your own benefit... I don't understand.”

“What you don't understand is how. The why you are about to understand.”

“This better be good”

“Isn't it always?”

“Fine, go ahead.”

“Your job is useful to me. Especially in connection with acquiring a great deal of money.”

“Not interested. Call me next time you rise from the dead.”

“I wanted to avoid this, but you are forcing my hand”

“Avoid what?”

“This. Take a look”

At this moment, Duncan slid a plain brown envelope across the table. Charles then picked it up and skimmed through the contents. Inside were copies of emails between him and Duncan. Emails that proved that they had been colluding to rob the estate that Charles had been posted to on guard detail. Even while sitting in his own kitchen, thinking back on it, he could feel all the colour drain from his face. The more he thought about it, the more Charles realised that he should have seen it coming. The last postcard he had received had warned him something big was going to happen and soon.

I am a film nut who loves mystery & thriller novels. I guess that's what I'll be writing about, mostly.
