A Farmer had seven sons and wanted to show them they would be much stronger if they stand together and made his point with a bundle of sticks tightly packed. He gave the bundle to each son in turn but neither could break the sticks. He then untied the bundle and handed them one stick individually. Each brother broke his stick effortlessly. See said the Father, you are much stronger when standing together.

The Bundle of Sticks

A farmer once had seven sons
who never could agree
He told them of their foolishness
but couldn’t make them see
One day they got together
as he asked them all to do
and then he showed them seven sticks
and told them what to do

He handed them the bundle
and each son then in turn
tried to break the bundle
but a lesson they’d soon learn
not one son succeded
the bundle stayed intact
they couldn’t even bend it
these small sticks tightly packed

They gave them back to Father
who untied the piece of line
he passed one stick to each sibling
each broke his stick just fine
“You see now”, said the farmer
“ stand together and be strong
but when you are divided
like the lone stick
things go wrong.”
