The Challenge lies in Refining, Perfecting our Systems

We are now in much safer, saner ground than during earlier times. However, the challenges never cease; they are now in perfecting, refining, our systems.

Face Challenges Head-on

Our lives are under increasing stress, but were they not always like that? We solve one problem but that process creates more issues too. It is a never ending process of creation and destruction; we have to keep running to stay where we are. As the wealthy say - it is not the wealth that counts ultimately, but the challenges in traversing the road and staying ahead of the pack! We have to take their word for it as we don’t travel that restricted road! Likewise, without facing umpteen problems ever-present in our lives we lack the spark in our lives. We should do our part in tackling issues crying for attention like poverty, climate change, war and peace. We should also be ever aware of the pitfalls and be prepared to reap their fruits of our action or even inaction.

Our Systems

We are in the best of times of human history in terms of political systems. Almost all countries are free. Over a generation ago, especially during the cold war era, majority felt they could perish in a nuclear holocaust. Thankfully, it looks to be past. Most counties have stopped spitting fire at each other especially the major powers. And now within one family there are people of different nationalities but still having close ties among them. So to conjecture a war looks not plausible but nothing should be taken for granted. I saw a picture today of a brother and sister in the Korean peninsula meeting each other after sixty years! It is politics that come in the way of North and South Korea. Democracy and freedom are feared by few who hold on to power illegitimately. Hopefully, it is only a matter of time the last bastions of brutal regimes are history.

Awareness of Issues

That we have reached the level ground of democratic systems has not meant people are enjoying a life that they deserve to. There are few out to take advantage of the loopholes in the systems and run away with the spoils. The majority should be ever aware of injustices perpetrated on them and refine, perfect the systems – it is an ongoing process. If we gloss over, it can only embolden the few and the rest will become cynical as has happened in many democratic countries. The leaders are into theatrics while their countries bleed. The inter- connectivity of modern technology should be used to make the good to stay connected. It is nature that provides us a feast in every way and the rest are just our minor inputs to keep us engaged and let what we create prove worthwhile. And let not the evil have a free turf because the good does nothing.

Common Ground

While people are made to fight among themselves we have lucky breaks by way of scientific and technological advances that keep us from going over a precipice. Imagine our progress had we been more united in pursuing our common dreams of shared progress. Now we spend more in trying to steal a march over others at various levels and distrusting even friendly countries. We are left to share the many common gadgets while unable to build trust in each other on broader aspects of life. There are virtually no borders between countries in terms of travel but enmity stoked by politicians to slow our march.

Lead the Leaders

It is time people told categorically their leaders not to waste our time and resources on keeping old issues festering. They should be told, led, by common citizens as to what they expect from them. No more negative thoughts out to destroy harmony that springs naturally among the people. Our goals are same – there is no need to highlight minor irritants to stall our shared progress. By keeping such issues alive we are unable to tackle more serious ones that stymie the poor on a daily basis.

Pass the Baton

How to get inspired to follow a different path? We have learned enough from history, but our pride and ego blind us often. When we have the urge within to make our lives meaningful and the desire for a better world, the chips should automatically fall in place. When one is attuned to speaking the truth all the time it will be almost impossible to tell a lie. Likewise, we have to step up to a level where we cannot wish any bad events to befall others. All are entitled to have their place under the sun and ours is a shared journey; no one is left behind beyond their allotted time! It is in perfecting, refining our systems in the hope of passing the baton for a better journey that we can find true fulfillment. And never forget our Creator is showing the way having given us needed wherewithal to play our role as co-creators; but still holding our hands.

Good eveing, Siva; thank you once again for a humanist perspective. I also think that past president, Theodore Roosevelt, summed up some key points as well. “The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, safety first instead of duty first and love of soft living and the get-rich-quick theory of life.” Might have application for other countries as well. ~Marilyn

Thank you Marilyn for your comments and the meaningful quote. What more worthwhile challenges do we need than alleviating the suffering of the many who suffer for no fault of theirs? The rich are supposed to be more capable and have the ability to do more and share their success meaningfully. The beauty of life is we can take on endless challenges, and may we have the wisdom to choose the right ones to benefit humanity - siva

It is my pleasure to share what I feel strongly, Carolina. I feel the majority is under the thumb of a minority who live in a World of Entitlement. It should not be wealth for its own sake. The ingredients that we have should be used more equitably and the Age of Enlightenment will be on us when that thought pervades humanity and motivates our action - siva

Thank you Jerry for your wholesome support. I love to read about different beliefs and understand where they come from as they are inspired and interpreted through great minds. Having lived among many with different beliefs one thought shines through - we have the same basic goals in life and the good follow the same path and inspire others - siva

When I think of everyone looking out for others around and all treating each other as we would like to be treated ...it sounds heavenly to me dear Siva ...Then we turn on the news and we are barraged with daily horrors of injustice , greed and worse ...on changing channels we are deluged with murder , corruption , adultery and hatred , and that is only the daily soaps .....
Oh for your Utopia ...
I will do my best in my little corner , as you will in yours ....so that's a start .
God bless you my friend with love and peace .

Thank you dear Stella - I understand your heartburn in seeing the daily mindless mayhem. Then again, within the darkness of our making the light that we shine will burn brighter. Busy are the days, but when I pause to acknowledge others they are touched and show genuine appreciation. The goodness within us will ever remain forever. Take care my friend - siva

Thanks Michelle. The majority wants peace - I will say, the vast majority. Let the few who believe in violence leave us alone to settle their scores themselves. Peace is an earnest human desire and an entitlement and let not the few scuttle our hopes. The patience of the good is tested and the tide is turning in their favor - siva

Your endorsement with such encouraging words make my efforts worth the while, dear Songbird. Some might feel I am an idealist thirsting for utopia, but what is wrong with that? I believe we get prompts to do the right thing all the time and our dear ones who have left us could be guiding us. So we cannot lose our way unless we deliberately take a destructive path. The evil acts up when the good allows them to - siva

If we do not have hope that things will change for the better then what have we dear Siva? Greed and corruption may always be man's downfall because of his thirst for power, but like you, I believe that hope and good can and will rise from such darkness.
Spiritually, man is still little more than a child, he has a lot more growing up to do and life is a learning process..\0/x

Thanks again Songbird. I always maintain the majority plays by the rules and even gives others the benefit of doubt, but few spoil the lot taking a yard when given an inch. We should always highlight such injustices as otherwise we accept them as a way of life. There is a strong belief and yearning that the Age of Enlightenment is around the corner and the Age of Entitlement will leave us when we become fully aware of its destructive effects on society. We have to grow up and soon so that our lives are more meaningful within an inclusive society. I see In Thailand democratic elections have little effect on the common citizens as they feel the corrupt manage to hang on to power through hook or crook I hope technology will not only expose their misdeeds but also enable the common citizens' writ to run - siva

Thanks Ptrikha for your views . If we have to take a meaningful next step it means treating everyone as equal. Otherwise, we are doomed to repeat a vicious cycle of wars, hate, religious differences resulting in one-upmanship and finally all are defeated by our follies. Then we leave with some hoping for a heaven. The writing is clearly on the wall exhorting us to live in peace; the sooner we take that path the better our planet will be - siva

Yes, Ptrikha. With big powers challenging one another, throwing down the gauntlet at the drop of a hat, human lives at the center of the cauldron have little value - they are treated as digits. We have a lot of growing up to do and fast! I do not know whether the UN can play any role in these emotion packed situations - siva

Unfortunately, UN's role seems limited and they just seem to make a few statements here and there. By the way, I think the Crimean crisis will wither away with just a few hostile positionings and statements by conflicting powers, at the expense of common people.

Thanks again Ptrikha. The big powers act on their own and talk down on others. Finally it is the innocent life that is extinguished ; it is the poor from opposing countries that have to fight against each other. The wars are fueled by the greed of arms dealers - siva

Thank you dear Funom for your wholesome support. India is supposed to enjoy a festival of democracy but the voters are forgotten immediately after the polls. The elected leaders are besieged by their cronies who live off them. They promise to get underhand deals taking a cut and this process is repeated ad nauseam. Democracy without rule of law is anarchy.

With modern technology we should plug the loopholes in the system and that should eventually lead to an Age of Enlightenment that we thirst for. Politics should be about public service and not living off the most vulnerable. Nelson Mandela was one leader who exercised the power through humility. He set right the system and forgave those who obeyed an unjust one including his jailers - siva
