Some older boys are taking an interest in girls Max is more interested in Space Travel and theater.

Kissing Girls - Yuk!

Mom says I’m getting so tall and handsome that soon some pretty girl will whisk me away from her. I tell her that will never happen but the fact that she might be right is somehow secretly exciting. I still don’t think much of girls of course, after all I’m just eight years old and haven’t started grade four yet. That will happen in September. I have noticed that some of the older boys at school are taking an interest in girls though, and that’s a bit scary in itself. Danny and I still swear that we’ll never kiss a girl, but I don’t think either of us is as sure as we once were. I’m convinced that most boys get a little sick in the head when they’re around twelve, and girls just take advantage of their insanity. Ike spends every free minute with Monica Jones and even Nath is starting to act goofy around girls, but then I’ve always thought they were a bit crazy anyway.
I wonder if mom and dad ever acted like that - If they did I’m glad I wasn’t around to see it. Monica has Ike wrapped around her little finger, he’ll do anything she asks. Now I’m SURE dad would never have been that foolish! They tell us in Sunday school that after God made the first man he made a woman to be a companion for him, if that’s really true I guess there’s no hope for any of us. I think I’ll have to start reading the Bible myself and see if I can get to the bottom of this. Say! I just remembered something, dad has an uncle Fred who is 92 and dad says he’s never been married, doesn’t even think he ever had a girlfriend – now that’s my kind of man; guess there is still hope for me yet.

Space Travel and Theater

The teacher thinks we should put on a play at Christmas and invite all our parents. He says that theater is a lot of fun and we just might like it. There’s even a drama class in junior high and that’s less than three years away. Oh, I didn’t tell you that our teacher this year is a man, and his name is Mr. Howley. He’s a really nice guy and even those who hate school admit that he’s okay. He loves reading and is always talking about the classics, and says we should be ready to start reading them soon - why the man even makes history come alive!
One day after a history class, he asked why I looked sad and I explained how I felt that all the fun was over, and I was wishing I’d lived in the time of Columbus. A big smile crossed his face and he said not to worry, we would have even greater challenges than Columbus. The very next day we had our very first lesson in Astronomy and he told us how some of our generation could be the first to land on Mars, and other exciting things about space travel. He said that this was a very exciting time to be alive. I think everyone in the class were holding their breath and hanging on to his every word. I discovered later that all of the boys and most of the girls had instantly made up their minds to be astronauts. Danny and I talked about it later and decided to ask our families to take us to an observatory where we could view the distant planets that we were certain we would be the first to visit
.
Soon after my birthday, which you may remember is October 22, we started plans for the Christmas play, and for a while we put our space travel plans on hold. It was the usual Christmas story with Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus and of course it included the shepherds and the three wise men. Mr. Howley decided to give us all speaking parts, some of which were quite advanced for fourth graders. We were all determined however, to live up to his expectations. The day of the production saw all of the parents waiting excitedly (and probably a little nervously) but at the end, they were on their feet applauding. Mr. Howley was beaming and said we had all done a superb job. I’m sure at that moment a few of us even considered switching careers!

This chapter brings back so many memories. School plays and talking to young girls.
