I make friends with Nathan, a new boy in school who is shy and often hungry.

Nathan

Nathan wasn’t at school today, yet no one seemed to notice but me. When I asked Miss White about him this morning she said that she hadn’t heard from his parents yet. She smiled at me though and appeared pleased that I’d asked. I didn’t know Nathan before starting school so we had never been close friends, in fact, he didn’t seem to have any friends at all and was alone most of the time.
I noticed this during the first week, but I’m not sure if anyone else did except the teacher. She tried to get him to mix in, but he was usually off to himself playing with some blocks. Once I joined him and we made a giant tower together, he smiled but didn’t say anything. Sometimes I tried to get him to join me and my friends during break time, but he never would.
Later, I asked mom to add something extra to my snack because I didn’t think that Nathan had that much. She smiled and gave me a hug, saying of course she would. Nathan seemed surprised when I offered to share from my snack but he hesitated, than asked if he could have a sandwich. I said sure, although I’d expected him to want a sweet instead.

A New Mom and Dad For Nathan.

After that, there was always an extra sandwich in my snack, and it was always what Nathan wanted. Slowly, he started to talk a little and one day after we’d eaten our lunch, he whispered, “thank you Max, You’re my best friend ever”.

Later this afternoon Miss White said that she had something to tell us about Nathan and that we should all be very quiet. She explained that he wouldn’t be coming back to school here because he was getting a new mom and dad in another town. “What about his old mom and dad”, asked Noah, “won’t they miss him, and won’t he miss them”?

Miss White was very quiet for a moment, and I thought I saw a tear in her eye. “I hope that all of you love your mom and dad”, she said slowly, “and that they love you, because love is the greatest thing in the world” Everyone was very quiet after that, I’m not sure if we understood what she meant, but all of us were smiling when our moms arrived to take us home.

Touching end Kingwell. I do hope children like Nathan will find peace, love and understanding. They should not suffer for no fault of theirs - siva

Nathan had a poor home environment and his parents were not taking proper care of him. He had to be placed in foster care and hopefully found a place where he was loved and learned to love in return. Thank you for following. Blessings.
