I get a puppy and decide to call him Charlie. I also discover that I have a great-grandmother that I've never met.

My Puppy

What should I name my puppy? I really don’t know a lot of names yet, but for some reason John and Charlie keep popping into my mind. John just doesn’t sound right for a puppy though – what do you think? I’ll probably name him Charlie, I hope John won’t be upset – now where did that thought come from? Who are John and Charlie anyway? I know it sounds weird but I feel like I should know. Here I go again- Serious Max is what my friends are going to call me if I don’t stop this. Why can’t I call my puppy Butch or Buster like any other kid?
It was fun looking at all the puppies but it was hard to choose, I wish I could have taken them all. Charlie – ya I guess that’s what I’ll call him – is just seven months old and is white with brown spots. He seems to like me a lot and Mommy says we can play in the back yard on sunny days. I think he’s really happy to have a home and keeps jumping on me all the time – we’re going to have lots of fun together. I can’t wait for Danny and Mitchell to see him, bet they’re going to love him too. Mommy says that he loves kids because he’s young like us, but I know he loves everyone, it’s just that the big people don’t have time to play with him.
I wish everyone would learn that we should all take the time to play sometimes – even big people – because life is supposed to be fun. I saw some people yelling at their kids when we were at the grocery store today and that made me very sad. Why don’t they just love them the way mommy and daddy loves me? I think people should just love each other for who they are instead of getting upset. Jeeper’s creepers! I’ve got to be the most serious little boy in the world! Come on Charlie, you can lie beside me while I watch cartoons - maybe Danny and Mitchell will be here later.

I discover that I have a great-grandmother.

Danny was over this afternoon but Mitchell had to visit with his grandparents and will be here tomorrow, he can’t wait to meet Charlie. I knew that Danny would love him and he did, we had such a fun time. Mommy thought we were a bit loud but she didn’t yell at us, just smiled and asked us to be a little quieter. She and Mrs. Sparks (that’s Danny’s mom), were drinking coffee and talking girl stuff in the kitchen. Charlie jumped all over Danny and had him laughing like crazy. He’s going to ask his dad to get him a puppy just like Charlie and when we’re older we can do lots of neat stuff together.
After Danny left I helped mommy make dinner and daddy said it was the best he ever ate! Of course, I didn’t really do a lot but mommy said I was a good helper. I always have to go to bed at 8:00 but I’m never sleepy, so I just lie here and chatter away to someone, I suppose it’s just myself, but I know I can’t stop. I bet I even chatter in my sleep. I wonder what happens when we go to sleep. Maybe when I’m bigger, I’ll be a scientist and discover a lot of things, even things like where our minds go when we’re asleep and why people dream. Sometimes I hear grandma telling mommy about her dreams, I wonder do people dream more when they get older? Oh! I just remembered, mommy told me that I have a great-grandmother that I haven’t seen yet! Can you imagine how OLD she must be? I can’t wait to talk to her because I want to know if God really made the world in seven days like they told us in Sunday school, and if he made the dinosaurs, why did he let them all die. I think it would be fun to have a pet dinosaur, probably even more fun than a puppy.

So interesting and heart warming to read and reflect, thanks Kingwell.

Max has clear thinking and a feel for others - in fact, adults will be better off if they listen to him! Happy that he gets all the love that every child deserves unlike some who are treated as burden by their "busy" parents - siva
