Mom has a new baby and it's a girl. Everyone is making a big fuss over her just because she's an old girl. No one wants to play with me anymore.

Jealous Max

Mom came home from the hospital today with my baby sister. I have to admit that even I was a little excited; after all we have a new baby in the house – even if it is a girl. I wasn’t overly enthused when I first discovered that I was going to have a baby sister instead of a brother, but mom seemed so excited that I didn’t have the heart to let her see my disappointment. Danny and I discussed it afterwards and he said that the baby would be too small to play with us anyway, and by the time he was our age, we’d probably want to do other stuff.

Mom went out and bought tons of baby clothes - all pink of course and they’ve even painted her room pink, can you imagine? Grandma and grandpa Wright are here naturally; and Grandma and grandpa Small are coming in a couple of weeks for something they call the christening. People have been calling all day saying how happy they are that mom finally has a girl .What’s so special about a girl anyway? Whoa there Max, do I detect a little jealousy? Of course not, I’m much too big for that, why would I be jealous of an old girl anyway? Neither grandma nor grandpa has spoken to me since they arrived. I’m going to my room maybe I’ll even hide and have them think that I’ve run away. We’ll see how they feel then!

Big Brother

Man, this has been such a great evening, I’m not even sure I’ll get any sleep tonight! After I came to my room grandpa came in, jumped on the bed and started to tickle me. Then he took me on his shoulders, carried me out and dumped me on the sofa where grandma tried to smother me in kisses. Of course I tried to get away, what six year old boy wants his grandmother to kiss him? It was really only pretend though, because I really loved it, but I can’t tell anyone that of course. Later, dad and I took Charlie for a walk and then we played catch in the backyard, dad can be so much fun sometimes.

When we came back in the house, grandma had cooked meatloaf for dinner while mom was taking a nap. I thought that was so funny because moms never take naps in the afternoon! Grandpa took me into the baby’s room and as we looked at her sleeping so peacefully; he told me that I had a very important job now because I was a big brother. Little girls he said always needed a big brother to watch out for them and I must be very proud of my little sister, and make sure that she didn’t do things like run out into the street. I was all smiles when we came out because I’d promised grandpa that I was going to be the best big brother in the world. Mom read me a bedtime story, than gave me a kiss before she left the room. I didn’t even try to resist and even gave her a big kiss on the cheek. I think I want to stay a little boy for a while yet.

Max has indeed matured after realizing his added responsibilities. Good that all are making him feel important too. Children want to be dependent yet independent, and I think that feeling lasts a lifetime for adults too!

Thanks Kingwell for this emotional chapter and I am sure Max will rise to face the challenges - siva

I like that quote. Most of us can relate to it! Great job, Kingwell!
