The Constant chatter Chapter Nineteen

Summer is over and I'm back in school. I am in grade one this year and mom things I'm growing up too fast - can you imagine! I'm also excited because mom tells me we are getting a new baby!

Grade 1

I wonder what it would be like to be a baby again! Why is it that we can’t remember? Mom talks about when I first stood alone and when I took my first step, and even how my first word was ‘mom mom’ and a day or too later I said ‘dad dad’. It seems really silly now that I had to say each word twice. I still can’t remember though, no matter how hard I try. Sometimes though I get this really weird feeling that this isn’t really my home – it’s like I’m supposed to be somewhere else. I mentioned it to dad once and he was really quiet for what seemed like forever, then he just smiled and suggested we take Charlie for a walk. Later Danny came over and we played some Nintendo.
It’s been a fabulous summer and Danny and I have taken Charlie and Buster, (that’s Danny’s dog) for a walk every day except when it rained. We’ve also played for hours in our backyard. Summer’s over now though and we’ve been back in school for more than a week. I was a little scared of Grade 1 at first but now I think it’s going to be a breeze. Our new teacher’s name is Miss Applebee, and she’s awesome! I remember how I really loved Miss White in Junior Kindergarten and then last year it was the same with Miss Bond, maybe all teachers are special, or perhaps I’ve just been lucky.
We don’t play with toys anymore unless we’re having a party but we still color pictures and teacher says I’m good at staying inside the lines. We’re learning to read now as well and we’re also doing math. Mom says I’ll soon be all grown up, but I don’t think I’m ready for that yet. Maybe she’s just scared that I’m growing up too fast – moms are funny like that.

A New Baby

Wow! Have I got news for all of my friends! Mom told me this morning that I’m going to have a little brother or sister, isn’t that exciting? I believe she and dad want a girl, anyway mom says it’s going to be the last, but I hope it’s a boy because all girls want to do is play with dolls and stuff. She said that she will know which it will be when she visits the doctor next week. I asked where the baby was now, and she said that it was growing inside of her. That makes a lot of sense I guess, at least more than Noah’s mom’s story about the stork bringing him, I never did believe that.
I have a lot of other questions too, but I don’t know anyone who could answer them. I know that mom is talking about the part of us that we can see, but isn’t there more than that? What about the part See Chapter Oneof us that thinks and chatters like I’m constantly doing? I think it comes from somewhere else, like God or something but I don’t know what that means either. I wonder if the baby is thinking right now, and does he, (it has to be a boy) know who his mom and dad are going to be or that he has three big brothers? Is he chattering now, just like I am? Did I chatter before I was born?
Okay Philosopher Max, don’t go off the deep end here, leave that stuff for the grown-ups to figure out – isn’t it enough that we’re going to have a new baby? Oh I can’t wait to tell everyone – I bet Miss Applebee will be surprised!

Babies want to know all, but over time they know they are denied even knowledge of what is natural. Their curiosity is stifled.

Max is sure thrilled like we all are, thanks Kingwell! siva
