A lone traveler walking back to his tea estate labour quarter met a strange dog before midnight. Whatever happened to that man?

Be Respectful to All on the Way

After teaching a student the poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” written by S.T. Coleridge I was reminded of an incident not far from my native tea estate.
Transport service to most of the tea estates is less than negligible. If you return late from district towns like Siliguri or Jalpaiguri, you will have to return to your residence on foot, unless you keep your bicycle on some roadside shop. On one such a day, a tea estate man was walking home. It was a winter night when even 10 o’clock appears and feels like midnight. And it was half past ten. This traveler was still three kilometer from his home. He was passing through stretches of tea bushes when he saw a dog standing on his path. The dog was just standing and looking at the man with a strangely innocent glance. It was not moving off the road. The man thus stopped on the path picked up a stone and threw it at the dog. Hit with the stone the dog moved off the road. The man walked further and soon reached his quarter in the tea estate labor lines.
He took ill the next day, took worse the second day and breathed his last on the third day.
What do you make of it, dear reader? Was it just coincidence? Was the cool air the culprit? Was it some unclean breeze that hit him? Was it just plain fear that told upon him? Was the dog blocking his way some supernatural being? Was throwing a stone at it an unforgivable mistake? Do you think I am being superstitious in asking these questions? Well, you may think what you wish. Come to live among these eerie tea estates and you will get to know what I am writing about!
