A short fiction story about a driving test. Hope you enjoy it folks!

The Driving Test - A Fiction Story

Karen hoped that the bloke in front of her was going to be the one to give her what she’d wanted for a long time and good looking too she thought, as she followed him to the car.

She needed to pass her driving test this time. She couldn’t fail again and anyway this would be her last time, she vowed to herself.

She slid into the driving seat. Her mini skirt went even higher revealing her toned, slim legs. From the corner of her eye, she could tell the examiner was watching her. Her flushed cheeks and her foolishness made her drop the keys onto the floor. Bending down to pick them up, her low cut top fell even lower.

"Silly me," she said.

"Don’t worry, you’ll be fine. Just don’t let nerves get the better of you."

Nerves, she thought. That’s me all right.

Passing the Test

She started the engine. She could feel her high heels spike the mat, as she drove off, making sure she signaled to go. She knew she was doing all the right things. She would make it work this time. There wasn’t any way she would let him fail her.

"Take a left turn here," he told her.

Her hands controlling the steering wheel were doing excellent, as her top slid off her left shoulder making it fall down further.

"Now could you pull up here on the left," he said.

She did as she was told and turned to look at him, not bothering to pull her top back up. She watched him, as he wiped his forehead with a tissue. He took his time to tell her what to do next and when he did, she felt him watch very closely.

Her skirt, by now, was up even further on her legs, as she struggled to do a reverse. Turning herself to look behind, she hadn’t realized her top had fallen down, showing off her new, white push up bra. Her legs touched his innocently, as she moved back into her sitting position facing the front and she saw him wipe his face this time.

"Carry on driving now, please," he said.

Driving on, she felt she was doing great. Her confidence was better and she focused on the test brilliantly.

She slowed down, as she came to a zebra crossing and stopped to let some children cross. She pulled her top back up her arm and shook her hair out of her face, trying to get ready to move off again.

She drove at a steady pace and felt uncomfortable, knowing he was watching her every move.

"Turn left please and we’ll get onto the main road," he instructed her.

She did as he said. She knew she was doing well, but she felt he was staring at her legs more than ever. His eyes were like a hungry animal and wondered if she’d done something wrong. She didn’t want to fail. This was her only chance. She couldn’t keep taking tests again. It was getting too expensive and she needed a car for her independence.

"Turn right after the traffic lights, please."

They were on a small country road now. She made sure she didn’t go over the speed limit, as she carefully drove on.

"Please pull up anywhere along here," he told her.

She stopped the car and waited for his instructions on what to do next.

"Now I want you to do a three point turn."

This was harder for her. Her nerves began to get the better of her. Her concentration wasn’t helping. She breathed in slowly. Her chest heaved in and out with deep breaths, which started her off in coughing fits. She couldn’t help it. Her mind whirled with frantic thoughts of failing.

"Are you okay? Do you need some water?" he asked.

"Yes please. I’m sorry. I don’t know what’s got into me."

She took a sip of water from his drinking bottle. Her lips held onto it and gulping it down, she heard him shift in his seat.

"That’s much better. Thanks. I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t given me some of your water," she said.

"Yes I can see and perhaps after this we can get on with more important things."

"And what’s that?" she asked.

"I shouldn’t being asking you this, but what about having a coffee with me afterwards?"

She was surprised. She hadn’t seen that coming. Examiners had never spoken to her before and this one was so handsome, she was sure she’d accept.

"That’s nice, but why don’t I give you my answer after this test," she answered trying to be sensible.

"Your right. I should be doing my job."

She did the three point turn, but not perfectly. She knew now that she was doomed. She wouldn’t let her nerves get the better of her. She hadn’t come this far to blow it all.

Back at the driving school, she sat and waited impatiently for his answer. She shifted in her seat and pulled her skirt down. Looking at her seriously and stretching his arm out on the back of her seat he told her the outcome of how she had done.

Leaving the vehicle, she smiled to herself. She’d passed. Her driving hadn’t been excellent, but her image had done wonders for her.

Once at home, her husband was eager to know what had happened.

"How did you do, Karen? Did you pass?" Tom asked.

"I’ve done it and now I can get out of these uncomfortable clothes. I don’t know what possessed me to wear them at my age, but I think it did the trick and they were worth every penny," she paused for a minute, trying to get the courage to tell Tom everything. "But, I promised to have coffee with him afterwards. Sorry, Tom, but I couldn’t say no, could I?" she said, smiling with joy, as she held her pass certificate in her hand and knew that being forty was the start of a new beginning.
