The Good and the Evil; Classic Duality of Creation

The classic duality of creation is at play all the time keeping us alive while goading us to be positive co-creators in our epic journey. The challenge does not exclude anyone, anything.

Duality of Creation

The eternal tussle between the good and the evil underlines the classic duality of creation. Where there is good, there is the bad even within our bodies and countless number of them in all types and shapes! We know of good and bad cholesterol as they fight for supremacy; we are safe as long as the former retains control. It highlights our existence is a challenge and certainly not a cake walk. We are made to earn our living and not take things for granted. Our own mind plays tricks on us and it is a daily fight to remain positive to rightfully play our roles as co-creators, however insignificant our part is. We do have fulfilling roles if we care to make the effort as negative roles will only add to our overall misery. We are aware of what we have to do; still we have to fight inner demons often, reflecting the duality of creation.

Cooperation and Distrust

We see the good and bad among countries; the classic duality at international levels. Countries cooperate as a rule in times of emergency, especially in times of natural calamities. Is there a method behind these events to draw us closer while we tend to drift towards the brink especially in times of peace – what an irony that we cannot leave others alone during the calm and have to be reminded by nature and creation to cooperate in times of disasters! If only we had this basic motive to coexist right through underpinning our common journey!

Common Dreams and One-upmanship

We have common dreams and fears. Many seek refuge in their beliefs but one-upmanship undermines unity. We can see blatant power-play when few try to put down others as a matter of course to show their beliefs are superior. The basic fact that we are from the same source is too patent but our human tendency is to ignore such writing on the wall to put others on the defensive. Most of the strife in our world has religious undertones, sadly. Ironically, rather than religion being a refuge for troubled minds and giving solace it tends to underline our differences in thinking and practices goading us to stand our ground. Emotions and blind rage take over resulting in daily running battles.

Natural Resources

When we came on the scene, the planet was fully endowed and ready to welcome the “special ones” walking erect, even some with a chip on their shoulders! We had no real enemies to confound and subdue us, but only our own to contend with! Most of our time and resources are wasted to stay above problems self-created. Differing views are dealt with negatively. Waste of precious resources is taken as par for the course with technology goading us to discard those that are of use still.

Profit Motive & Charity

We are becoming more mercenary by the day but charity touches the majority hearts – another duality that is part and parcel of life. The exclusive club does not relent to show their mettle by squeezing blood of the innocent but the society still has the few to rise to show compassion when the push comes to shove. But the duality of heartlessness and compassion takes its toll on our lifestyle leading to a cynical world where being good is termed a loser and to be successful one has to be smart; meaning, taking advantage of situations.

Born Innocent: Live and Die Likewise!

I believe all are born with a good heart and kind; only circumstances make us act otherwise. Some are deprived for no fault of theirs and survival instincts make them change over time. Fairy tales are just that and the real world is uncaring and favors few. Some are born with silver spoons while others in abject poverty and misery – another duality of life tough to justify! To make our world truly worth living each of us has to fight injustices along the way, help remove hurdles. The poor are easily satisfied and want mere recognition and assurance that they too count. In fact, they are content and wonder at the lifestyles of few rich that are plain hollow like the emperor sans clothes! It is time gross injustices in society are addressed and fairy tales do not die along with our childhood. There is no justification to close our eyes on few riding roughshod, having their way – we are born with wonder in our eyes and we should side with the good so that evil is kept under check, even shown the door!

An excellent and insightful overview, as ever, going right into the heart of the matter.
Good and evil, arch enemies.. borne of man’s vast differences in perception.
Greed, oneupmanship, hunger for power and control, violation, violence, all are foods feasted upon at life’s banquet of evil.
Good being the powerful antidote, will always fight to overcome the other.
As you write Siva, we come into the world in a state of purity, and through all walks of
life, regardless of who we are or whatever role we may play in life, we always have
the choice to leave this world in the same way.
Thank you for this great post Siva.

Thank you dear Kingwell, your words touch me. Your posts take me to another world far away from Asia where I have lived all my life. The young Andrew still lives in my mind and not a fictional character as you might have meant him to be! He is too real for me!

Thanks again for your kind gesture of sharing my posts and I feel truly humbled but also encouraged - siva

Thank you Mariah for your valuable and insightful input. We are aware of what to do as the spark for being a co-creator resides within us and when in doubt - do unto others as you would have them do unto you. However on a daily basis we have to confront the evil both outside us and even within. We may have a take some are plain lucky but even for the richest luck runs out as they are surrounded by sycophants who feed them what they want to hear.

I have found being good and helpful leads to bliss while pursuing wealth in a selfish way leads to misery and isolation. I find bliss in spending time with those contented, but it is plain agony with the rich who are mostly greedy and discontented. They get overwhelmed taking wealth creation as the be all and end all and even their families leave them to their devises as beyond reason. I remember the words of a poor but contented man - what for all this wealth when one loses peace of mind?

We come into this world innocence personified but have to discard fairy tales to fit in. It is time indeed to fight tooth and nail to do what is right - siva

Good morning, Siva; I will echo what all others have commented. This is one of your best articles about your ongoing theme. The reality is that as an individual, we do what we can and I believe that we have a responsibility to use our voices to educate. Your voice is powerful, just, compassionate and needs to be shared. Doing so now. ~Marilyn

Thank you Marilyn for your kind words of support. I am thankful to you for sharing my post. I reflect on what is going on around me and voice out my feelings. This may sound idealistic to some, but if it leads to a change of heart within few it would make a difference - let us move towards equity and justice - siva

Thanks for the motivation. I feel I must strike a balance between fighting injustice and finding my happy place. But your article helps me see that sometimes we fight injustices to get to that happy place, and sometimes the "fight" is less combative and more communicative. I am trying that now. TY

Thank you Phyl, I appreciate your uplifting words. I like to voice out my feelings especially when I see injustices perpetrated on the most vulnerable. Over the years many issues that were taken as par for the course were not only highlighted but also resolved leading to a more inclusive society that benefited all including those who resisted the changes. So each can do but little, but if each will do that little for betterment of society, everything will fall in place. The reward is the satisfaction we get by contributing our bit.

I may add I make sure I try to give more than I take but it also happens the rich is hungrier to take endlessly while the poor is reluctant! siva

There is an african proverb which says "we come to this world naked and so shall we return" not with money, wealth, friends, family or even loved ones, we go back to the grave the same way we came to this earth..... naked.
Your article reminds me of this proverb yet it still begs the question, why do humans have the desire to amass wealth begotten or not, with the knowledge that someday they would be dust with only bad memories clinging totheir names, not a single thought to a kind deed?
As for religion, all have being done and said in the name of one god or the other, to profit whom but the master minds who aims to get ahead.
There is no religion in the world today that doesn't preach peace, yet the blood stains plus the many inhuman attrocities tells it all.
Great work Siva..... may your ink never run dry.

Thank you Joyalariwo for your valuable input that lends support to my post.
I am in the finance field and I have seen the "naked" greed all around. I have squirmed when private bankers swoon before the rich to get their deals. Even the very top is not excluded from such kowtowing! To become a billionaire from a poor country is a sin (sorry for the word) as one should not aspire to become one.
Many super rich lead lonely lives hugging their wealth till their last moments if they were not deprived earlier by their own. They distrust the well meaning all along. The comeuppance is faster than they think possible.
I am reminded of a tale - two, who knew each other, reached the pearly gates at the same. The poor farmer was welcomed ahead of the wealthy. With trepidation the farmer went forward while the rich man loudly protested to Saint Peter. I have done so much charity and has been devout - it is an insult I am kept waiting while the lowly farmer gets the nod - but was politely, but firmly, told that the farmer was hard working and benefited the society more!

As I had stated, religions tend to divide humanity. Many look at our beliefs to judge us and even if one is from the same belief physical appearances cast a shadow.
Thanks for the encouragement - I was active at Yahoo CN and had posted 400 articles of similar vein so the ink cannot run dry! siva

Frankly Mark, I had headlined the Good and and the Bad, but changed it to evil to drive home my point. However, some of the injustices that are perpetrated on the most innocent borders on the "evil" than the mere "bad"! I believe wars emanate from evil minds - siva

Thank you Wonder for your kind words. There could be those who may not agree that all are born innocent as DNA and inborn traits could affect our thinking. dear Siva ...I don't think we have to look very far to see terrible evil and injustice in this world ...but equally there is great good to be seen as well ..
I for one believe that all of us have a propensity to do both , and our longing to do good may be greater than our intent to do bad ... but unless our hearts have been changed we will always struggle against selfish desires over unselfish ones ...
I am , and ever will be grateful that my Saviour made that exchange possible for All mankind at Calvary , and that in accepting His gift of love , I am forgiven .
God bless you dear friend

Evil is really undermining good in most of the systems accommodating both and that is why the world (even though is relatively in peace) still has fractions of chaos around.

@ Mark, sure.... Evil do exist. Take for instance, a country like Nigeria where statistics has shown that more than 100 million (That is 10 Hungarys) live below $1/day and yet ONE FORMER PRESIDENT has a sum total of about $2 billion in America and Europe (this is what was discovered, he may have some)... Surprisingly, is he the only one? NO! Statistic tells us that 400 Billion Euros has gone missing from the Nigerian economy since 1960... THIS IS PURE EVIL! And it doesn't just stop there, these political elites organize mass murders for their political advantage.. Just two days ago, about 200 (mothers, pregnant women and children inclusive) were brutally butchered when asleep in the night! Is there anything as evil as this?

Thanks Funom, the majority has a conscience but that gets blurred in the face of greed! The wealthy loot the most vulnerable and what a karma that will be, like an albatross around their necks forever! I have expressed a view that to be in the super rich list from a poor country is nothing to crow about (time to hang my head in shame for people like me!).

Behind every great fortune there is at least one crime, but many just carry on without much thought. Sadly, in a materialistic world wealth is taken as the epitome of success! The poor and rich have different takes on life and once we cross the border of greed it encompasses everything we do, and nothing else matters. From India too many have secret accounts abroad and the big financial institutions collude with them though they pay fines when America threatens them for violating their laws as without their support they are history! siva

Dear Siva
Although we commonly talk about binary opposites like good and evil, black and white etc I feel that such terms are relative. Perceptions vary from person to person and often times exist in our imagination. What is good to some people may be evil to others. I say this because in the real world things are not that crystal clear for us to separate something or somebody into two extreme compartments like good and evil or black and white. Duality is what Man has created for himself with his imperfections.

Thanks for your take, dear Subra. However, we should be clear of what constitutes the good that benefits society and the bad that is mostly selfish pursuits that harm society. When we ignore clear signals few get emboldened and take advantage with a evil may care attitude. Not only our conscience but the laws are there to be followed not only in letter but in spirit too. Of course, there are few to take shortcuts of the gray areas and the comeuppance will be on them at some point in time, but the society suffers too. Let us give no quarters to blatant injustices in society - siva
