Family vacations create lasting memories. Make sure you spend time with your family in ways that they will remember forever.

Trip To Southern California

My most memorable Christmas vacation was when I was a teenager in 1978, and my family took an epic vacation to Southern California. The memories it shaped and the bond that it created between my siblings and me, fill me with a deep sense of gratitude.

There were six of us; we all travelled in a bright green miniature Toyota pickup with a cab over camper on the back. My little sister slept in the cab of the pickup, my two brothers slept in the bed over the cab, my parents on the bed made by dismantling the table, and myself, on the floor of the camper. One evening I was taking down the table to set up my parent’s bed. After taking the table top off I grasp the metal pole to pull it off its base. I pulled as hard as I could, it required much less force than I anticipated and I pulled the metal pole toward my face and hit my nose.

Our first stop was in Las Vegas and Circus Circus. After Las Vegas we made our way onto Southern California and down to San Diego. In San Diego we visited the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Wild Animal Park and Sea World. I have always loved animals and for me this was the highlight of the trip.

After San Diego we drove north toward Los Angeles and onto Disneyland, Queen Mary, and Universal Studios. In 1978 Disneyland was offering either the ticket book with A B C D and E tickets or an all day pass. When we got to the gate my Dad said that the all day pass was more expensive, but since we had travelled so far it was worth the cost.

We then drove to Ventura to see our Uncle Al and Aunt Mary. Uncle Al gave us a ride in his convertible 1926 touring bus from Yellowstone National Park. My father worked at a grocery store and we were all supposed to wear identical baseball caps with the store logo. During the ride my hat blew off and my sister, who still hasn’t gotten over wear matching hats, says that I did it on purpose so I wouldn’t have to wear it anymore.

The trip was truly remarkable, really a once in a lifetime experience. We were and are grateful to our parents who sacrificed a great deal to make it happen. My sister who was about eight at the time wrote a thank you note to our parents had us all sign it and handed it to them through the window between the camper and the pickup as we drove. It was one of those moments in time when everything was perfect.
