The Levite And His Concubine

The story of a guy who pimped his girlfriend to save his own ass…literally.

"Some men just want to watch the world burn" - Alfred from the Dark Knight

Some guys are just unbelievable.

Then you get guys like the Levite.

For clarification, the guy’s name is actually never revealed. But when you read his story in Judges 19, it’s clear he was a lowkey sociopath.

Now when we are introduced to the Levite, he lived in Israel at a remote place called Ephraim and already had a concubine. Now, the precise nature of the relationship between the two isn’t explained but no other wife/wives or additional women are mentioned in the story.

According to the story, the two had a falling out (she was unfaithful to him) and the lady left him and went back to her father’s house and stayed there for a while till the Levite went to go persuade her.

When the Levite arrived at his father-in-laws house, he was gladly welcomed and spent three days there. Presumably, the man and his concubine worked things out and got ready to leave on the fourth day.

But as they were preparing to leave, the father-in-law kept on stalling them to leave the next day. When they planned on leaving the next day, the father-in-law stalled once again. This pattern continued for three more days until the man had enough and decided to travel, despite it being late.

The Levite and his travelling companions (his “wife” and a servant) decided to settle for the night in a town called Benjamin but no one wanted to take them in until an old man let them stay for the night.

All was going as planned until a group of guys found out about where the guy and his group were staying and decided to pay him a visit to…”know him”.

I’m actually being subtle; these guys weren’t exactly mincing their words when they stated their intentions:

22. While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, "Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him."

This isn’t the only time this has happened. In fact, this seems to be some kind of accepted thing that happens frequently.

Just what the hell is up with biblical townsfolk and their need to have sex with male visitors?

Personally, that’s not even the worst part. Like a true biblical host, the owner came out and tried to placate the restless crowd:

23. The owner of the house went outside and said to them, "No, my friends don't be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don't do this disgraceful thing.

24. Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But to this man, don't do such a disgraceful thing."

At this point, I’m not shocked about the guys offer. Offering your daughter/wife in barter seems to be a frequent thing in biblical time. I’m more shocked that he said it so casually.

Just what the hell is up with biblical hosts offering women in their families?

It didn’t seem to help as the crowd still rejected the hosts offer.

It was arguably at this point where things went to hell. My description of what happened won’t do it justice so I’ll just quote the verses so you can see I’m not making this shit up:

25. But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go.

26. At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight.

27. When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold.

28. He said to her, "Get up; let's go." But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.

29. When he reached home, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel.

Without a hint of concern or remorse, this guy just went from sacrificing his concubines honor to straight up mutilating her Hannibal style. I mean was there a need to chop his concubine up like he was dicing some onions? To add on to that, when the elders and leaders of Israel understandably came to get an explanation as to why the hell he sent them pieces of his side chick, his explanation for what he did was absolute rubbish:

6. I took my concubine, cut her into pieces and sent one piece to each region of Israel's inheritance, because they committed this lewd and disgraceful act in Israel.

The Israelites and Benjamites had some simmering tensions and with his moment of madness and bullshit explanation, he gave the Israelites all the encouragement they needed.

Because of his actions, the Levite began a war between the Israelites and the Benjamites.

However, through all the bad things that happened, some valuable things were learnt in this saga.

1. As a man in biblical times, DO NOT visit unfamiliar towns as you may be forced into some uncomfortable situations.
2. As a host in biblical times, DO NOT invite people to stay the night as you may be forced to make some uncomfortable choices.
3. As a woman in biblical times, DO NOT travel with any man under circumstances as you may be forced to do some really uncomfortable things.

Some daughters pimp themselves for their fathers too amongst others ready and waiting as it is a part of their lives and upbringing of the open living culture.

Hi Lady Aiyanna.

Can I just ask how that works?

Do they willingly do it, or is it duty or some other reason?
