For eight teenagers life is about to change. Living on an island that has been cusrsed for an eternity takes its toll. For a certain group of young adults they are about to enter a new realm in which shadow and fear rule.

Prologue

The town slept restlessly. This was not unusual for the small town of Haven. The long-standing residents had long ago named it Hapless Haven meaning unlucky home. Since the day the first two civilized people arrived on this land it had been full of bad luck. In 1756 James Donald and his fiancée Sarah Faith had traveled to this small island. They had heard about the island from other travelers. None of their friends or family had actually believed it existed but the few who did or had actually seen it gave fair warning of its myths. James had laughed at the tales of a haunted island calling it a just that, a mere myth. Throughout his years in Haven however, he realised there were truths in these tales.

He had his first doubts about haven around four months after he and Sarah had arrived there. Sarah had been with child as she awoke to the sound of a girl screaming she had tried to wake James, but in vain. The screaming stopped so she lay down again thinking she had imagined it, they had not come across another living soul since landing. As her head touched the pillow the scream rang out again. She got up warily opened the door of their cabin and followed the sound of the scream around to the back of the cabin along the East Side. She felt something grab her ankle and fell rolling down the steep hill on that side of the cabin. James had found her in the morning without child and when she explained what had happened and asked about the girl, he replied “What girl, there’s no-one here but us my love?”

When they had first landed on the island it had been an island full of trees, nothing but trees for miles. Faith Island was about 25 miles long by 15 miles wide. They had landed on the East Side and decided to build their home there. They had named this part of the island Haven. Haven was very different now. Most of the woods had been felled to make way for houses, shops, roads and the oldest and largest church on Faith Island. The church stood on the East side of Haven, pretty much were James and Sarah’s cabin had once stood, across from Passings Grove where Morgan Faith lived in one of the oldest houses on the island. The church had stood since the year 1778, James Donald had actually helped to build it. He had passed away 2 years later. His grave still lay in there at the north East side of the graveyard, it lay beside the only mausoleum in Haven.

The mausoleum belonged to the Faith family, it went deep down underground into the island. Sarah had been laid to rest there. The minister had however, refused to place James at her side, he had said it was a sin as they had never actually been married. He did not take into account that there had no minister on the island until after Sarah’s death. She had died at the age of 22 giving birth to their third child Sean only 4 years after landing on Faith Island. James had given Sean his mothers surname, Faith, in honour of her. This had never stood between him and his elder brother and sister Marcus and Heather Donald. However in the end it had been the same minister who had buried Marcus and Heather, one either side of their father. Sean had been laid to rest beside his mother along with many more generations of the Faith family including Morgan’s mother. Along with generations of the Faith family there came centuries of change and all apart from the old church and the few remaining woods it had changed greatly. Not for the better.

Extract - The Meeting

She was almost at the end of the path when she spotted what she was looking for. In the distance she could see a girl standing at the very outskirts of the wood, along the cliff edge. She had seen her many times before and always the same happened. Morgan sighed as she watched the Midnight shadow move swiftly behind the little girl. She had given it this name as she had seen it many times but it had no features that she could see and it always came out during the darkest (midnight) hours but the few elders of the town who dared mention it’s name called it the Black Variola. They believed along with Morgan that the curse of the Celts had become so strong it had been able to take a form. It moved behind the girl and as before she started to turn but too late, as though she knew what was about to happen. She watched as the girl engulfed into the blackness for a second and then watched her tumble off of the cliff edge. She wondered what thoughts must be going through the girls mind. Immediately afterwards the Midnight shadow turned and began moving swiftly but solidly in Morgan’s direction.
