Alison lost her husband without warning only 2 months ago, and now she fears she is ill. She hasn't told her daughter Lisa that she is visiting the doctor today. Read on to find out more.

The Secret

Alison sat patiently waiting to see the doctor. It was a while since she had visited, she was usually very robust and healthy, but after managing to get an appointment today, she had plucked up the courage.

She had made the mistake of looking online to see if she could treat herself, but, after typing in in her symptoms, the suggestions had been frightening. She knew if it was serious she would have to face up to it, so had made up her mind to see the doctor, and although outwardly she appeared calm, all sorts of mayhem was going on inside her, causing waves of nausea to plague her.

It's not as if she was old, only forty two, but right now she felt so much older, especially since her beloved Ben had died so suddenly. Two months ago, at only fifty years old, he had collapsed and died with a blood clot. She was still getting over the shock of it, he had seemed so well, but one day he was there, and the next day he was gone. Two months later, it still felt like a dream.

She wished she had confided in Lisa today, then she would have come with her, and it would not have felt such an ordeal. Lisa was only twenty, but very mature, and her support since her Dad had died had really been so heartening, because it had been a shock for her too.

Lisa had been so supportive

She was glad Lisa still lived at home, right now she felt too fragile to live on her own. But then she rebuked herself for her selfishness, Lisa was suffering too, she wasn't the only one, but this additional worry which had brought her to the doctor only added to her anguish.

The buzzer sounded, and she saw her name flash up. Now it was her turn, and her heart thudded with apprehension as she crossed the corridor and knocked on the surgery door.

Dr Simpson was a kindly man with a gentle manner, who realised she was vulnerable after recently being bereaved. He felt sad when he examined her, what a time for this to happen, and he could tell she was going to be deeply affected when he told her.

But it seemed Alison already knew, and his confirmation of it was no great surprise, she had choices to make, so she thanked him and went home.

Alison made a cup of Tea

It was whilst she was drinking a cup of tea that Lisa arrived from home from work. In her lowest moments she had wondered how long it would be before her beloved daughter would leave home and move in with her boyfriend.
"Mum are you ok, you look very pale?."

Alison could no longer keep her secret, so she said calmly.
" I feel sick because I am pregnant.."

She could have screamed out in anguish just how unfair it was. They had tried for twenty years to give Lisa a sibling, and now, with no husband any more, nor father for her baby, she had finally conceived, but she didn't have to go through with it, women had choices these days.

Lisa was amazed. Her first reaction was to wonder how her mother would cope, but then this baby could change her life, she would be so busy, it might actually help her to heal, and of course, it would be their last link with Daddy, so very dearly loved.

Alison lost control

Alison felt the tears unashamedly running down her cheeks as she poured out how much she had wanted another baby, and how Ben would have loved it too, but now it was too late, the timing was all wrong.

Lisa hugged her mother, and they supported one another whilst they both digested the reality that there was a new life growing inside her. Finally Lisa spoke.
" I always wanted a brother or sister you know, and if Dad were here now he would be so proud of you. How do you feel about it. Lots of women have children in their forties these days."

Alison had expected a negative reaction from Lisa, she should have realised she would be supportive, and now she realised this baby would be a part of Ben and herself, and she now wondered how she could have even considered an abortion.

"Yes I have thought about it a lot. When I went to the doctor I thought I had a serious illness, and then I found out it was a baby, a gift from God, sent to me for a reason."
"Congratulations Mum, I'll be there to help you always miss Ben, but her life was not over yet, and there was a new life growing inside her that had been created by her and Ben, life must go on. It didn't matter what anyone else thought about her being an older mum, her own daughter approved, and that is all that mattered.

Touching story Carol. Every life is a gift from Creation and we should cherish and be grateful no matter how tough our predicament is. I am sure Alison will cope with the support of Lisa and Ben blessing them all - siva
