The Shade of Winter

March is finally here and with it our hopes look toward Spring. Yet here in Maine the extreme cold of this year's winter still has its mighty hold...

Winter Pathways

Seeking shelter with the mist,
Down winter pathways
A wayward wisp of my breath
Becomes vapor heavy...
Frozen in mid-air.

Standing In the Gray

Pristine snow fields
Stretch ever out-ward from the sea.
Just behind me, as I stand
Here upon this rocky white edge,
Deep and dark, the vast woodlands
Surround the ice-shattered shore.

I feel the pull of a distant stillness...

Before the Storm

At that furthest corner of the cove
A cold mist lies low,
Holding the infinite horizon
Within that lonesome gray of winter's soul.

There is nothing left for my imagination Delicia as I am with you in winter though sitting faraway in Asia! You have described through words and pictures the haunting winter that you experience and also its subtle beauty - the classic duality of creation - siva

I was overjoyed to see the black & white photos. Black & white photo can be so much more dramatic than color photos, yet very few photographers are doing B&W these days, it's slowly becoming a lost art form.

Jerry good morning...:0)-I love the use of back and white photos too.. Mike has taken some great ones..but alas, these are full color and just the hue of our reality here in Maine...a pale palette tis true... but in it I find a familiar comfort- March not only super windy but usually called our mud season- remains today a frozen wonderland beneath the misty gray.. we must patiently wait any signs of spring...mud would be welcomed...LOL...thanks Jerry so glad you stopped by....

Outstanding, completely capturing the essence of winter. Actually, Delicia, I do have a small collection of B&W pics, but no articles to go with them yet. Some of the pics were taken during my stay in Holland - in winter. I also have some dramatic mixed sheet and fork lightning taken in the Outback during the 'wet' (monsoon season).

Morning Mike...saw you drop by as I was doing my E-mails....Mike- these pictures are in color- it is the gray of this cold mist of March that makes it look like they are black and white photos... ...it does feel like being back in one of my favorite childhood movies...:0)...thanks Mike so glad you came by i very much appreciate it...:0)

hauntingly beautiful dear Delicia ...Oh the depth and bleakness of winter that is captured here within your words and pictures ...
We truly have an amazing world ...full of wonder ...whether hot or cold ...How poor the one who cannot see the beauty that lies within the contrasts , and appreciates their differences .
Thank you for enriching us all here
God bless you with peace and warmth in your soul

Hello Delicia Powers... Its been a while I visited your pages and I feel so so guilty about it. I will make it up (Its my work, actually, but this excuse still isn't good enough).. The same attractive force from the title which dragged me here kept me till the last line. This is a wonderful piece, dedicated to this year's winter which almost threatened to be a devastating one. Thanks for the wonderful share...

YOU smell of a rosy bush
in apple hue
your words are the gems
in Cadbury chocolates
golden milkshakes,
banana and apples
all read you for the smiles
a onetime country gal,
now grandpa gives her love to
youthful poetic kids, like me

I love to read your enchanting poetry,
on a large screen wide
of picturesque Maine
which I have yet not seen

I love my Niagara...
some day may
the one hiding behind the clouds permit
I may Maine visit…
twill be my pleasure
Ma’am….
