This is my 50th article, and I would like this to be something special. I have written inspirational stories about people who are dear to me. This time, I would like to share with you my own story which highlights the shining moments of my life.

My Childhood

I have mentioned in some of my previous articles that I grew up in a family where daily struggle to survive was a way of life. This life status did not become a hindrance for me to weave my dreams, although at times, I wished I was born to a well to do family so I would not experience hardship and poverty. My family and I had been through a lot of difficulties, most of the time, financially. It wasn't easy to belong to a large family of 7 kids. My dad was the only bread winner, and my mom was a full time housewife. When I became a little older, I came to realize that my family was the most important thing I needed than anything else. I thank God for not taking away my dad from us when in the late 60's, we almost lost him when he was stabbed by a notorious gang member. I actually don't remember this incident as I was too young during that time. I can't imagine how our life would be without him if all kids were left in the care of my mom alone.

Tough and Good Times

I did good in school. With my parents' guidance, I was able to maintain good grades and got some recognition. I participated and won contests in school such as Spelling, English, and Essay Writing. After graduating from high school, I planned putting off going to college because I wanted to help my parents with our daily financial struggles. I tried to find a job but since 18 was the legal age to be able to work, I wasn't able to get a job as I was only 16 then. So, I went and pursued my college education. I went to a public school, but I had to take a qualifying test and compete with thousands of students. I took the exam and after a few days, I was glad to learn that I ranked 2nd in the list of qualified applicants. I took a 4-year Secretarial course, which was the only available college course in that school. So, I had to let go of my dream of becoming a Fine Artist. After spending 2 years in college and as soon as I turned 18, I tried to look for a job again. That time, I was successful. I got my first job, working during the day and going to school at night. When I got my first pay, I gave everything to my mom. That was my gift to her as an act of gratitude for the things she has done for the family.

Struggles and Hurdles

I still had 2 years to finish college, and it seemed like it was taking forever. I was having difficulty due to the distance between my work place and my school, so after a year, I decided to quit my job. An opportunity knocked when my college dean approached me and asked me if I would like to work in the Mayor's Office in the town of Makati. It was just a temporary position that was created in view of the Mayor's youth project at that time. I accepted the offer, and right then, our college dean wrote a recommendation letter for me. There were several candidates for the position and I was lucky to be the one chosen.

After a year, I was out of work again and still going to school. I got another job working as a Secretary for a government sector. It was very difficult balancing work and school, so it took me 5 years to complete a 4-year college course as I had to drop some classes due to conflict of time. At the end of the 5th year, I finally finished college and graduated with flying colors.

My Shining Moments

In spite of the difficulties I experienced, I can still say that I enjoyed my life. In the middle of the struggles, I also experienced some shining moments, such as being on top of my class, getting my first job, and finally graduating in college. I consider my graduation as my brightest shining moment because I had finally reached my goal. This was the moment that my parents were waiting to see. I dedicated that success to them and I knew they were very proud of me. I realized that you get to appreciate success better if you overcome some sort of struggles in life. That makes you feel you have accomplished something. I also think that I was lucky to be able to work while I was still a student, because job hunting was very hard even for those who have already graduated. I had a lot of friends who remained unemployed long after graduation.

I would also like to emphasize that my other sisters, especially the 2 older ones also went through the same experience, working and studying at the same time. They both helped send our younger sisters to school. I am so lucky to be part of this family where love is the focal point in life. With them, I always experience a shining moment.
