A short article on how shopping has changed since i was a young lad. Some shopping is better now, but not all as i remember some very valuable points.

The Shopping Change

Now days some supermarkets will deliver goods to your home, but how things have changed since I was a young lad.
There were no supermarkets and most of the shops were down your local high street. Most shops would specialize in a certain type of goods, from ironmongery to cake shops.

..

The Butcher

The butcher like most shops of the time would give you a very personnel service, greeting you with a smile and chatting with you as he got your order together.
He would know all his customers that well, he would know every persons likes and dislikes. On top of all this you would not need your shopping bag as he would deliver the meats to your house the same day.

..

The Grocer

The grocer and green grocer were the main shops on your list for a lot of the goods.
Again like the butcher he would know what you liked, gave a similar service and would deliver the same day.
Our grocer new us that well that he would even phone us to find out if we required anything. You don`t get that today !

...

The Baker

Just the same as the butcher and grocer, personnel service at it`s best.
However I can remember that on a Good Friday at about 8 or 9 am he would delver fresh hot cross buns to tour door, and they were still hot, yummy what a treat. All other shops were closed, the bakers shop as well, but on Good Friday mornings he spent his time just baking and delivering his hot cross buns.

..

The Milkman

Now the milkman gave a personnel service but delivered everyday except Sundays. He would deliver milk, fresh farm eggs, yogurt, cream and cheese, I can remember the horse and cart.
As we did not have a fridge in those days his service was invaluable.

Yes things have changed, not all for the better.

Service has progressed a long way from how it used to be, but this was a lovely nostalgic look back to bygone days..Congratulations on Star page Maurice..

I feel those days the taste was real not contrived like now! We did not have this much choice, but we have lost a lot along the way of inexorable "progress". Thanks Maurice for a nostalgic trip down the memory lane - siva
