Charlie Braxton McRoy 13, in route to obtain his one obsessive desire: a genuine Red & White SandBlaster located in Fleming's Sport Shop. The sale of a mysterious bracelet will enable him to purchase his long cherished dream. So what's the problem?

Chapter 2 : Castles Lure Us How Can We Resist?

Charlie crossed over Buckle Lane knowing fully well to get downtown he had to turn up Barefoot Alley then he would head up toward Regency Square. Traffic deadlocked at the intersection. He quickened his pace, moving in and out of the jammed honking vehicles. Charlie Braxton McRoy, 13, was so excited about his new found treasure; his mind barely registered the irritated drivers' derisive yells.

No longer did Charlie walk, he ran; his zealous mind packed with expectations of ownership of the genuine Red and White Sandblaster. Without realizing how far he had gone, Charlie looked for familiar landmarks that would indicate how much further he would have to go before he reached Landau's Jeweler's.

The red bricked Roberson Cola Factory on the corner of Jackson and Blair alerted him to the fact that he had no more than a half of dozen blocks to go. On the way to Landau's Jeweler's, he would have to pass right by Fleming's Sport Shop. Then, he could take two minutes to gaze at the genuine Red and White Sandblaster, one more time.

After he turned the corner, where the blue metal mail box stood, and crossed over the alley that led to the White Bricked Masonic Building; he would only have two more streets to go.

"God, I think I'm going to die. I can hardly stand it." He anxiously felt for the cold bumpy gemmed bracelet inside of his jeans' pocket, just to make sure he hadn't made all this up.

"It's true!" Before he could peer at what his heart desired above all else, his mind seemed to strip a gear.

"Can you believe it?" he shrieked to himself, swallowing quick,

"I'm going to own me a genuine Red and White Sandblaster!"

He stopped briefly at the four-way junction of Knight and Jester while feverishly waiting for the light to turn green before he hurried across. He could hardly contain the truth; he was going to get the one thing in the whole wide world he wanted more than anything else!

Regency Square, only three blocks stood between he and his soul from viewing the only coveted dream he could ever imagine from coming true.

Over excitement caused his legs to twist and stumble; he glanced down at the curb of the sidewalk, while catching himself before he fell. He observed tangled bits of mingled trash and dirty cigarettes which punctured the pile of weather-beaten grimy pine straw. How could it be that such an irreplaceable priceless bracelet had been recovered out of a jangled filthy mess?

How could it be explained; inside his pocket, a bracelet that must be worth thousands of dollars, had appeared to him on the cluttered sidewalk bright as the sun? What an enormously momentous lucky day!

Never would he have imagined when he opened his eyes in the morning that he would be standing in front of Fleming's Sport Shop looking at 'HIS' Genuine Red & White Sandblaster.

Thinking his heart might explode because of the excitement, he turned his legs' running gear back up to full speed. Then, it happened. He slipped and tumbled smack dab onto the middle of huge stone steps that led up to the front of a humongous ancient castle.

"Where did this spooky place come from?" A surprised Charlie gasped.

"I don't ever remember anything like this place being built. I was just here 3 days ago."

He followed the red carpet up to the front entrance, fourteen stairs exactly.

He counted each one as he climbed. When he reached the top, disoriented, he was taken back a bit by the enormous size of the doors that led inside. But, stranger than the size of the doors, was the odd fact that there were no door knobs visible from the outside.

"How weird. How in the world can anybody get inside this place?" Charlie's heart raced.

Things had happened so fast to Charlie on this day that he momentarily forgot all about where he was headed and why.

"Wait a minute. I don't have any business up here. I'm on my way to sell this old bracelet so I can get my genuine Red and White Sandblaster."

He spun around quickly, intending to leave the porch of the castle; headed down the 14 steps when he discovered that there were no other houses or buildings anywhere to be seen in that specific area. Not only that but the castle wasn't even on the ground.

Charlie was somehow, someway suspended in mid air on the front entrance way of a tremendously huge ancient castle.

"This just don't make any sense. What in the world am I doing up here in the air like this?" Instantaneous logic set in.

Without a moment's hesitation, he decided he would knock on the huge door; the rap so faint, he instinctively knew no one would ever hear him. So, he banged and banged as hard as he could.

"Where am I? What is this place? How did I get here? Who is in there?" Charlie yelled louder than he had ever yelled in his entire life.

He was hollering and carrying on so bad, he almost didn't see the small three inch flap door that opened before him down at his right foot. He immediately fell on his stomach, looked into the hole yelling,"Hey, who is in there? Let me in, or better yet let me out of this stupid place and off this castle."

"THE ONLY WAY OUT IS IN!" a small mechanical voice declared.

"What???" Charlie asked.

"THE ONLY WAY OUT IS IN," the voice spoke again.

It seemed to Charlie that the voice buzzed from some sort of animated electrical sound that did not originate from a human. Or, at least, no human he had ever heard before.

"O.K. But, you don't understand. I really want to get in. Open the doors so I can."

"NOT UNLESS YOU SHOW ME THE BRACELET, FIRST!!!" Spoke the firm unidentified voice.

"Bracelet?" Charlie rambled, "What bracelet?" He completely forgot the mysterious bracelet he had crammed in his pocket.

"Oh, the bracelet? What does this bracelet have to do with anything?" He responded at the same time he reached into his faded jeans and pulled from his left pocket the mysterious bracelet.

"Here it is," he said. No response. He pushed the bracelet back into the same pocket deciding to try once more to vacate the premises.

The small flap door slammed shut, while at the same time, from the top part of the two huge doors, tiny slated window blinds started opening/closing as fast as they possibly could with the fiercest amount of wind.

The force nearly blew Charlie away. He fell to the floor of the porch trying to hold onto the red carpet for dear life. He had nothing else to cling onto except the same red carpet which had led him there in the first place.

"What in the world's going on? You trying to kill me or something?" he screamed savagely.

The life-threatening wind stopped abruptly as the two enormous doors opened. No one appeared from behind them. Charlie slowly struggled onto his feet and moved inside. The room so stifling dark and massively pervasive but before he could change his mind to run outside, the doors blasted shut behind him.

Charlie Braxton McRoy stood in a strange old castle, suspended in mid-air, in the pitch dark with no way out.

Boy! Was he ever in a jam! Charlie was scared to death, out of his mind; who wouldn't be? What could he possibly do, now?
