A true story about a visit with my cousin and an encounter with the paranormal.

Visiting my Cousin

My cousin and I are the same age. When we were children we were best friends. I had moved to another town so when we got together it was a great event. Her house had been built by my father and grandfather in the early thirties and it had a big screened in porch. On one particular visit in 1958, we were both twelve years old. It was in the heat of the summer, so as a treat we were allowed to sleep out on the porch where it was cooler. It was wonderful lying in the dark and talking about everything that was happening in our lives, laughing and joking. Eventually, we drifted happily off to sleep.

Encounter with the Unexplained

Sometime during the night I woke suddenly to hear what sounded to me like three blasts of some kind of horn. I tried to place the sound; not a car horn, not a train whistle etc. It was more musical than these, but didn't sound like any instrument I knew. I lay awake wondering what the sound could be about. Soon I heard footsteps crunching on the gravel road and then the sound of the gate opening and closing. I wasn't too worried because I knew my uncle sometimes came home late from his logging camp. So I stared at the screen door half expecting to see him, but instead I heard the wooden steps squeeking and the screen door creak open and close, but I saw no one.

Now I was terrified and petrified. I couldn't speak or even move to poke my cousin though she was sleeping right beside me. The sounds continued; creaking floorboards as if someone was walking over them; the sound of the knob on the door to the house turning; the sound of the door opening and closing although, just like the screen door it never moved.

My Aunts' Explaination

I lay paralyzed, eyes wide open for the rest of the night till the dawn and the birdsong brought me back to some sense of normality. At breakfast I told my Aunt about my experience. Though she seemed concerned, all she said was, "Your grandfather and great grandfather used to hunt at night down on the flats. Hunters used to blow a horn to call the dogs." and that was the end of the conversation;but the next night we slept inside.

Reflection

I'm thinking now that it was one of the men of the family returning from the hunt. My sister said my great uncle may have lived there for a while. He died in 1952 six years before my visit. Perhaps his spirit was not settled into the after life yet. I never knew him and I sometimes wonder if who ever it was saw us as he walked through the porch and into the house. In the picture great uncle Jack is leaning out of the screen door to the porch.

The images are:
English: Print of a hunter blowing a horn and a stag in the forest. Also present is tabulature showing the rhythm of the horn signal. public domain. It is dated 14th century
The picture of the horn is also public domain and the horn was made before 1600.
The photographs are courtesy of my sister, the family archivist.

I remember, around that age, I had a fantasy of wanting to be a detective and used the red sap oof a tree that outlined a human form tto call it a murder, rape and kidnap and called friends to assist me to findd the killer. Kept us occcupied and needless to say it triggered off thiss nocturnal awakenings with the intensity to write at a young age. The flip side was that I used to have nightmares and fears of the dark and resorted to singing in the dark too. It has since gone away but can come back if I were to stay in the country side without adequate lighting. Thee above happened in a metropolitan town....
Majority of the paranormal ghost acts couldd be real but att times more our imagination.

Though I have had no experience I can recollect that gave me fright, I did see an apparition of one elderly man in front of me one day morning as I was going to office. Suddenly, it vanished after a minute; then only I realized that person had passed on couple of months before. So our senses are limited and life has endless possibilities and may never end! Thanks for this interesting share, C D, that makes one think of life and death - siva
