The garden's getting too much for me

In the middle of my garden, there is a stand of assorted trees about 20-25 feet high and 20 feet around. A few feet away standing in long grass, another slightly smaller stand that is now blocking the entrance to a small wooden shed that's grey with age. They appear to be very old, and to have not been touched at all in years. I do try to do my best but the work is too heavy for me.

Weeds tallest of all poked through holes in my fence,

The grass grew longer in my yard, weeds tallest of all poked through holes in my fence,
An old green a red lawnmower lived in my shed, didn’t get much use though, gone rusty,
Old hands ain’t what the were fingers crooked the ball on my thumb joint red and sore,
Pulled the old machine out onto the grass tried to push it, the damn thing never moved,
Put on some gloves to pull some of the stingers out they always catch my ankles bastards,
But no matter how hard I pulled they stayed where they were, an old scythe would help,
Sitting on a concrete porch put my head in my hands, past my prime, can’t do much now,
Days now long, time now short, mustn’t give in, got to try to do things myself, be active.

She looks at me and smiles

My old cat wandered through long grass, sat down leaning on my leg rubbing its chin,
Go back a long way, remember picking her up from the cat sanctuary to bring her home,
Sure she smiled when I picked her out she purred like a little car on the side on the road,
Been best mates since, she knows when I’m down, just as I do when she’s feeling old,
My little old friend sits on my lap in the evening I tell her stories of my younger days,
About all the good times and sometimes give a low chuckle she looks at me and smiles,
Some say animals are stupid I don’t believe that at all as you can see that by looking,
“Come on girl lets have some tea,” we both walk a bit like John Wayne to the kitchen.
She hops onto a chair then the draining board while I look in the cupboard for her food.

I have a couple of slices of cheese on toast

I have a couple of slices of cheese on toast a large slice of cake with a hot cup of coffee,
Have a walk round the front room puffing up cushions, picking up papers a nightly ritual,
The old cat sits on the arm of the chair and watches every move then it’s time to sit down,
She sits on my lap as I begin to tell her a long ago story, pricks up her ears and listens,
I tell her stories of when days were kinder and I could do most things and meeting girls,
Games we would play on the playground fifteen aside football matches with a burst ball,
Or hopscotch, grid drawn with limestone, an argument if the stone is touching the line,
And she sits and looks at my face as I travel back, purring, smiling she likes my stories.

Almost as much as I do

Summary

Older cats have less energy and are more placid than kittens and are content to spend much of their time watching the world go by. As they slow down, their play becomes less energetic and less alarmingly acrobatic. Cats are at their most companionable in these later years. They enjoy attention and companionship, but will not pester you continually for games. Most owners find caring for such cats a very rewarding experience and in turn, an older cat will enjoy the love and security that a caring cat owner can provide.

You are right. Cats that have lived with you for a long tme are good companions. They always know your ups and downs and are ready to cheer you up. And they seeem to know far more about life than we humans might imagine.

I still don't know if i am a cat person or a dog person i always tell everyone I love most animals than can be a pet. Though in my recent years cats mark a lot in my adventures including my art. One thing though, i can easily be spellbound by a cat than be smitten by a dog.

Animals and birds are our fellow travelers, with similar feelings. Touching post, thanks Terry - siva
