Boy, I had to wake up early to finish my work in time to go along with Father, Mother, Auntie Rene and Uncle Gus. Today we are going for our pecan nut cultivation course at a pecan nut farm.

The hidden mansion of considerable beauty

We drive and drive and drive. Finally, we arrive.

This world looks like a dried up ol' desert. Not quite a desert but sort of flattish, plain, colourless brown dead grass type of environment.

We drive up a long driveway to the homestead hidden among some trees or something. I immediately notice a bunch of trees that have grown so close together for probably about a hundred or two hundred years, that they now look like this one tree with many trunks all morphed into one another. A site of indescribable beauty really.

Then, we are greeted by a paradisical lawn of bright green, flat as a carpet. Should we drive over it? A woman some distance away waves her arms at us to invite us to come to her over the lawn.

Well, if she's got no problem with it, then yes, we shall glide with our motorvehicle over the lawn carpet.

Oh good lord!! What is that? Is that the farm house? It's a mansion of biblical proportions, built huge and in the Cape Dutch style. Here? In this part of the world?

I can't get over it. The beauty of it is overwhelming! Whoever envisioned this must be a true artist of impressive caliber.

Later on Lady Enid and her husband, the owners of the place, welcome us to their estate. We enter the mansion by walking up steps and over a stoep being polished by a black maid. How wonderful and nostalgic; when in the last century have anybody had a servant polish their stoep? I can't remember even seeing that in my lifetime. It adds so much nostalgia to the air and a perception of class I have forgotten exist.

The inside is just as impressive. Auntie Rene seems to go mad at the size and beauty of the interior and rooms. They're so stylish and well taken care of. One of the bathrooms have the bath in what seems to be a step pyramid of beautiful white and black marble, going up step by step into a corner, the steps holding the soaps and shampoos while the bath looks fit for a king.

I can't make out if Auntie Rene is becoming mad with overwhelm or if she's really, really jealous. She tells me "Money talks here!" Yes, money talk everywhere my auntie. Are you jealous or are you close to tears with envy and dumbstruckness?

The ceilings are so high and the curtains go up really high in front of the windows too. The light fittings take me on a flight of fantasy to a time and a place I can only describe as... heaven or wherever.

And Lady Enid offers us the most delicious homemade caramel pancakes with caramel cream and homemade mini quiches.

Best part of all, Lady Enid buys two DVD's from Mother, containing our "Whiskers and Flappy" movie. Oh, I love this lady so much more with every passing gesture!

Well, after the good reception, it is time to start the pecan nut cultivation lesson. Everybody outside into the orchards!
