Since INDIA has the people of different languages with different cultures and traditions,
"Pushkaram" makes all the people gather at one place, shows the unity in diversity

What is Pushkaram

Pushkaram is a festival of rivers which pertains to 12 important rivers in India.
It occurs once in 12 years for each river.

It is celebrated based on the presence of Jupiter and it lasts for a period as long as Jupiter remains in that particular Zodiac sign.

It is believed that Pushkarudu, also known as pushkar God who is powerful to make any river holy will travel with Jupiter,as Jupiter travels from one Zodiac sign to another Zodiac sign.
The first 12 days of Godavari pushkaram is called Aadhi pushkaram and the last 12 days of Godavari pushkaram is called Anthya pushkaram.
These 24 days are very pious to devotees,as pushkaradu travels during these days.

The Godavari Pushkaram and Mahakumbhmela

Godavari pushkaram is a festival of River Godavari which occurs once in 12 years. The pushkaram festival last held in the year 2003.
Again, after 12 yrs, we are celebrating it , in 2015.

This year, it is termed as Maha kumbhamela. Maha kumbhamela occurs once in 144 years.

During Godavari pushkaram pilgrims from all over the country will have a holy dip with the belief that they would be relieved from all sins.
They also perform rituals to the departed souls. It is believed that during pushkaram all deities and rishies take holy dip which will enhance one's spiritual, mental and physical abilities.

After Effects

Most commonly experienced problem by the public is the heavy traffic in the transport system to reach a particular place to take the holy dip.

The undue delays in the running of long distance trains due to traffic congestion on the Rajahmundry Section forced AC passengers to look for alternatives and they are making good use of the discounted fares being offered by various airline operators.

There was heavy traffic even in the reserved compartments, some people complained that their reserved berths were occupied by someone else, and they had to adjust and travel all the way.

Meanwhile, long distance trains continued to run late in view of the traffic congestion and delay in the arrival of pairing trains.
The death of several devotees in a stampede at the Pushkar Ghat on the banks of the Godavari on the first day of the Maha Pushkarams has left everyone shocked.

Another noticeable result of the heavy traffic is the profits gained by the transport system. As people tend to take the most available resource, to avoid the loss of time during the long distance travel, they prefer to pay high amount even if its not reasonable.

Most buses which were actually meant for the pushkaram travel, free of cost, were not to be seen on the roads.Autos were being avoided as the drivers were not ready to take any risk due to the guard of the police.
Finally, it was the public who suffered, walking all the way from ghats to the bus stations.
This is an experience faced by most of the public who went for the holy dip, I wonder how far this dip is going to protect us, leaving us helpless while in search of the transport system , to get back to the home towns.

Some other rituals with latest technology

One of the most important rituals performed during the Pushkaras is the Pityu Karmakarya, where pilgrims perform the Karya for their Prityulya (ancestors).

This is the first time that the Godavari Pushkaram services were offered online. There was a tremendous response.
Many NRIs preferred Skype services as they could watch the rituals being performed live.
Enquiries revealed that the priests charged between Rs 300 and Rs 5,000 for various rituals, the higher amount being for rituals that last up to two hours.
For 'Pindapradanam' (offering to the forefathers), the priests collected Rs 3,000 for 'online' and 'live' services.

One can imagine, how its going to be performed, after 12 years. The technology will even be better ,which may result in some more creative ideas.
Somehow, people are happy for the way they have concluded it for this time.

Thanks for this share Gowritells.

I am not much into rituals but try to go to the root, essence, of the various ceremonies and festivals. I take my hat off to those who are ready to face much inconvenience to partake in such despite physical hardships.

I too have done it earlier but yes with technology one can get the feel and intensity sitting in the comforts of homes - siva
