The slavery in America!

The pains of slavery still haunt many Afro Americans. They were plucked and hauled to an unknown land, in an unknown culture, away from the nature and the forests, they were so used to. Families got separated, parents lost their children. Times have passed, but many still face discrimination in several walks of life. The author describes their plight.

The fetters still hurt!

I knew not,
What lay across my seas,
Standing tall in the thickets,
I loved my Baobab trees;

Lions and gnus abound,
The hills with the silverbacks,
Water flowed all around,
Fertile ever were my tracks;

Like my brother, I too hunted,
Limited only for my food,
Never ever for mounted trophies,
Those adorn the walls of a few;

Now comes the new terror and sway,
The whites with fire in their arms,
Capturing and spiriting us away,
The disturbed sleep filled with alarms;

We churn the oars and brave the rain,
Through the oceans’ uncharted path,
Many of us silently succumbing to pain,
We were cursed and carried God’s wrath;

Failed to singe, the firebrands you put,
The lashes from the leathery whip,
Neither made me wince nor shed any tears,
I realised that my mind too was in your steel grip;

Centuries have passed,
My colour is just the same,
I am the first to be hauled up,
Guns thrust at my face to tame;

My memories faded of the spears,
I long forgot the bows and arrows,
I fail now to recall the tall Baobabs,
But still long to fly back as the sparrows.

What had happened cannot be righted, but we should make amends for it here and now - sadly, it looks not the case as one gets judged by the color of the skin even now. Heartfelt poem, thanks Kumar - siva

Thanks Siva for your observations. A continent lies wasted for the crime committed by humanity.
