The Wyrd

Old English people, they used to have this concept of "Wyrd" which is best described with a following quote: "Gæð a wyrd swa hio scel. Fate always goes as she must".

Well, in a nutshell, Wyrd is fate times 10. According to the concept of Wyrd our lifespans are predetermined and all of our days are numbered i.e. we are all allocated only a certain amount of time to live and this amount is set in stone and can never be changed or tempered with...

The lede that believed and put their faith in this concept mostly lived on the southeastern coast of Engaland (Old English spelling of England) an area of bluffs, crags, promontories, headlands, estuaries and fishermen. And the poem itself uses some of the vocabulary those people used (or at least what survived of it into Modern English).

They've both been through a tremendous loss,
The kind that seems to halsen the end.
It's been no more than a coin toss,
But the kind that the lives upend.
They both leapt off in a deadly foss,
Full of orts that, on the surface, scend.
In the frothy, tantalizing watery gloss,
They both saw the waves crush and rend.
They both were supposed to hit the rocks coated with moss.
Yet, the wyrd hent her... and you, boy, the wyrd didn't hend...

I must say this is interesting writing. However, I don't believe my life is predetermined. We make our own fate.

In Asia many believe in fate and that life is predetermined. Let us make the best of time available is my refrain. Thanks for this nice share - siva
